Yesterday I saw people shocked that @Uber is leaving Uganda 🇺🇬.
I told you this already, that Uganda can’t sustain a serious international company. In addition to the poor political environment, our society is full of thievery. Tuli babbi nnyo, atte twagala nnyo ebintu bya makoona.
Let’s look at some examples.
Remember Game Stores?
A person cud go to Game to buy a fridge and the attendant who’s paid to attend to you comes and tells you not to buy from Game. He tells you to go buy the fridge in Industrial Area at a shop where they’ll give him a commission. Imagine this. One time I was looking for a blender, and the guy started saying these ones are too expensive and they’re not good. He sent me to a muyindi who had a shop next door. So I wondered, how can we be this dishonest and still want to be rich? How do you decampaign a company that’s paying you a salary every month?
Imagine a company loses 50 customers every day by ur word of mouth , how will it be able to stand?
Now Uber operates on a service of honesty, but guess what happens: you book a ride, and the Uber guy says, “let’s talk off app.” What’s that?? The ride is Shs 34,000 and the guy says give me Ugx 50,000. What would the customer do? Of course they’ll run away, because they’re sensing a level of dishonesty. In Europe where Uber is operating, you can’t hear a rider telling you useless things of “let’s talk off app.” Such societies have a level of honesty ingrained in them. You pay for what u see. In fact, money is deducted without you saying a word. Ugandans still have a long way to go. We’re not employable. Tuli bakumpannya nnyo.
You give someone a role to speak to your clients and two months down the road he has diverted them to another business. Some people are evil enough to even create a subsidiary company inside yours. You pay them all benefits, but they are your competitors.
Speak about banks and loan officers. They come begging you to get a loan. You accept, and the loan officer starts playing on your mind. A loan applied for is 40 million, they give you 35 million, you spend another five bribing the protocol to approve you. In the end you take home 30 million yet you have to pay back 40 million plus humongous interest.
A bank advertises a property for sale, then the bank people go around, call their people to bid, and they sell the property to themselves. Our society is full of thieves. This is one of the reasons Barclays sold out. Loans are not balancing. The loan officer tells the client to give him some money so the loan can be extended. Ok, let’s forget about banks. Let’s go to those cars auctioned at ARU (read the reverse 🔄).
ARU puts up an auction of cars, you pay for entry, and before you know it the officers have already manipulated the system in their favour.
When a company closes in Uganda but stays functional somewhere else, then we have to check ourselves. Put it in mind that in U.S , launched a new service for live video streaming for children rides. It lets a parent view a livestream of their child’s ride using the selfie camera on the driver’s phone. The parent is notified in the Uber app when a livestream is available and both the child and the driver are alerted when the parent tunes in. Ffe Tuli enno mu “bi off app”
Which reasonable person or company can invest in such a dirty Uganda, full of mistrust? We’re not employable, and we will stay poor until we can become a more honest society.
Goodbye Uber. You’re not the first to try and won’t be the last to leave.
