Engineer & Team Manager. Enhanced by Ken Tyrrell, Roger Penske, Alesi, Mears, Emmo, Tracy, Power, da Costa, JEV & many others. Don’s son, Gavin & Paul’s bro
@KrisVanD2 Brian Lisles was the chief designer of 017 - Maurice Phillippe did the front suspension. Dr Mark Handford did the aero, Frank Coppuck did the composites and Graham Heard did the gearbox. Ahmed Osman did detail design and I did the wings, some gearbox bits and other odds and ends
@JeSuisSurtoutMe@TheBishF1 In the spare car at Clermont Ferrand after crashing his race car early in practice. Denny wasn’t impressed about having to give up the (different set-up) spare.
@sniffermedia@JarvoB Yes, his first time in a Tyrrell and the rear wing mount failed at the gearbox at the worst place it could happen at Jerez. Super embarrassing for the team and should, of course, never happen. Naka was fine about it, bless him. Harvey Postlethwaite less so.
@champwebdotnet@grizz814@Team_Penske Yes, photos taken November ‘94 at Nazareth. Car wasn’t really Junior’s - note the red roll over hoop - it was the test team car.
@sniffermedia Sam,this is out behind the pits at a Jerez test in January 1990. Car stopped on track (I forget why) so Jean decided to push it home, bless him. Last run on Goodyears before the switch to Pirelli
@tonydindy Rick Rinaman, on the right front wheel, was a ‘tunnel rat’ as a teenager in the US Army in the Vietnam war. After that he wasn’t scared of anything, and certainly not Emerson driving at him.
@marshallpruett@RightTurnLover @RACERmag The other big reason for the push towards Ally wheels is that Mg is very hard to recycle. When we (Dragon Racing FE) commissioned special wheels from Motegi they did them in Ally and (because of modern forging techniques) were able to match the magnesium wheel weights.
@agbullet25@daveye97@PorscheRaces Yep. Same guys again AFAIK. It’s how they were kept occupied between the cancellation of the LMP2000 and the start of the RS Spyder program. I engineered the no.6 Penske car - it was a fantastic program.
@agbullet25@daveye97@PorscheRaces A lot. The same group of engineers took what they learned and did the 9R6 (RS Spyder) under the direction of Dieter Steinhauser.
@tipsy_kart @DawnTreaderEng The PC27 turbo installation is unusual in that it is put in via the rear of the bellhousing. Previous cars (not just Penskes) had it installed from above, and then covered by a “toilet seat” casting. I never heard any moans about this. Biggest hassle was exhaust clamp access.
@ChrisMedlandF1 In another FIA World Championship - Formula E - the fastest lap set by a top ten finisher gets the point. This was done precisely to stop silliness like what happened today.
@caveatemptor20 @DawnTreaderEng Blocking the holes in the outer surface formed where the drill entered the casting to create the cross drilling. Lee plugs are just short, er, plugs designed for this purpose.
