I’m excited to introduce the Berg Backstops Summer Catcher Academy in Nashville.
This is consistent small-group training for catchers who want to get better, compete, and grow into leaders behind the plate.
We’ll focus on:
Receiving.
Blocking.
Throwing.
Leadership.
Game awareness.
The Academy will have options on Mondays and Tuesdays for both youth and high school catchers, with sessions beginning the week of June 8 and ending the week of August 10.
Spots will be limited to keep training detailed and competitive.

TAG PLAY FROM LAST NIGHTS TEXAS & GEORGIA CWS GAME.
1) Texas catcher initial set up is inside the 3B line & in fair territory.
2) When he reads the SS’s throw from
down the LF line, he takes a big drop step to get a more favorable hop. Unfortunately the drop step takes him behind HP which allows the runner to score before being tagged.
3) In today’s game with replay review as part of the process, it is best to make the tag before the runner gets to HP. Most successful tag outs are made up the 3B line on the slider’s midline before he gets to HP.
4) In this situation the catcher was probably not far enough up the line & took too big a drop step. ( Most likely a combination of the two) IMO the ideal initial set up on throws from
LF/CF is 17” up the line & 17” inside the line. From that position a good throw legally takes you into the line & keeps you from getting behind the plate. It also allows the catcher to work back towards the plate on a wide throw on the 1st base side.
5) Ideally on a close play like this one you are making a quick one handed sweep tag while pivoting through the runner while sliding & pivoting on both knees.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING 🦃⚾️
Tonight I’m grateful for my family, this community, and the game that’s given me a platform to lead and coach.
Thank you to the athletes who bought into the work, the parents who trusted the process, and the coaches who continue to mentor me along the way.
Catchers aren’t built alone — they’re shaped by support, standards, and the people around them.
I’m thankful for the village that keeps pushing me to grow in coaching, leadership, and player development.
Stay thankful. Stay hungry. Keep building.
“I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.” - Psalms 9:1

Feel Good Friday!
Feeding the arm through some long toss working into compression throws. Throw it far on an arc, pull it down hard on a line. Great for improving arm strength, endurance, athleticism, feel and much more!
Everything starts before the pitch.
Glove load + forward lean puts you in a position to work under the ball and drive it clean back to the zone.
Win the setup → win the strike. #BergBackstops#Baseball#Catching#Receiving
Everyone wants to know how to reach the D1 level. The truth is, it comes down to one simple principle: be elite at something. Whether that’s throwing 90+, hitting home runs, or running a sub–6.5 60-yard dash, the requirements are straightforward but achieving them is anything but easy.
Here’s a hard truth that might sting: if you’re a pitcher topping out at 85 mph, attending a D1 camp is likely a waste of time and money unless you’re an extreme outlier (ex 6’7”, 180 lbs). Instead, invest in your training to become elite.
If you’re fast, show it by stealing bases. If you have power, hit doubles and home runs. If you’re a contact hitter, hit for a high average. Find your strength, develop it relentlessly, and let your performance speak for itself.

The best catchers don’t just talk louder — they listen better.
They feel the game, calm the chaos, and lead with presence.
Leadership starts before the first pitch.
