It’s legitimately heartbreaking to me that this man’s race is of more significance to someone like Gayle King than his virtue. Only once she learns his color does he stand out to her, as if his blackness stamps him in her mental vision and sets him apart.

I think for most of us this man was already as singled out as it is possible to be, a lone dissenter amid a wash of muddled thinking and mass psychosis. All our images for depicting courage like that are depictions of one bright figure highlighted against a grey backdrop of conformity. Socrates in the Gorgias declaring his willingness to be the one instrument playing fixedly in tune amid a caterwauling orchestra. Some lone holdout refusing to salute along with a roaring crowd.

But blackness is the only attribute that can spotlight a figure against King’s mental backdrop in this way. Blackness—not courage, not integrity, not honesty or resolve in the face of intimidation. Her racism (pointless to emphasize, I know, but this is what it is) transforms the visual landscape of her mind into a crude patchwork of skin tones.

Maybe it was always a bit naive for Americans to claim they “don’t see color.” But as an ideal, it was immeasurably nobler than this soul-emptying determination to see nothing BUT color. The old ideal made us valiant and elevated in our aspirations. The new way has made us stupid and low.

I do think it’s a bit unfair to come down so harshly on Arday for serial fraud and producing fake research. He can’t be expected to know better, that’s just his culture*.

So basically everything on his CV was a lie, and yet, so paralyzed with the fear of being branded racist were his academic evaluators that they couldn't bring themselves to fact check even the most egregious of his falsehoods. This really ought to trigger a chain of resignations across the board. And this may be among the worst scandals in the long history of Cambridge University.

Important to recognize that Jason Arday was not just lying compulsively but also *doing his job*, or at least playing the role Cambridge had appointed him to, which was that of the imperious cherubic minister in an inscrutable mystery cult.

You were supposed to cleanse yourself through abasement beneath the scorn of his dewy blinking gaze, bask in the lavish implausibility of his fables, refine the purity of your commitment to justice by embracing the extravagant fiction of his genius.

For this purpose it was actually helpful that he was an obvious fraud and a pathological liar. Ideal, even, if he believes the fantasy himself. Flagrant, visible dishonesty is essential to the ritual, which is a kind of ego death for those who might otherwise have raised academic objections.

They were invited to prove their devotion to a higher cause by plunging so deeply into a rushing torrent of cognitive dissonance that when they emerged there was no lie anymore, because a black woman invented the telescope and Jason Arday IS truth. They have no objections now.

Also one of the least politically diverse departments and at the bottom of hours spent studying of any major. So many of the problems in K-PhD originate in Ed schools including some of the worst speech policing policies.

In my career defending academic freedom and free speech, I never saw anything become as immediately radioactive as views that ran counter to the narrative on trans issues. Papers were retracted, compelled speech was treated as normal, and people were canceled for saying things that would have sounded like common sense just a few years earlier. It seemed to become a kind of secular blasphemy overnight. And usually, that is a sign that the true believers know, at some level, that they are on shaky ground.
