As for DeBrincat, trading him essentially kickstarted the rebuild. So, again, keeping him changes the outcome.

Except, he won’t be the highest paid defenseman for much longer. the cap is increasing at a rate that will make it irrelevant. The 4th overall won’t be in the league until minimum 3 years. Forwards are getting insane deals too. Just the way of the NHL nowadays.

Byram was also behind Dahlin and Makar his entire career. Those are arguably 2 of the top 5 d guys in the entire NHL, so why put him above them?
