It's true! You don’t need students to spend lots of time practicing rhyming to support their word recognition. Instead, teach phonemic awareness. You can use Elkonin boxes to make it concrete - and connect letters to sounds as soon as possible.

So if you ask me, if you are genuinely interested in reading for pleasure, then start with your reading lessons:

Are your lessons ensuring pupils become fluent readers?

And are they giving pupils the chance to lose themselves in wonderful stories, poetry, etc?

@MmeLockhartLDSB @thismomloves Please excuse my ignorance, but is this test taken on computers? We also take a state-mandated reading screener 2nd-5th grades. (Prek, K, and 1 is one-on-one with teacher.) I have noticed many students, especially those with attention difficulties, do not give their best effort.

This is why some schools are shifting to developing their instructional model so that teaching is efficient, explicit, and effective. This involves managing cognitive load, successive re-learning through retrieval and spacing, and short cycles of feedback and assessment.
