LEGAL STATUS OF INVOICE AND RECEIPT.

Invoice & Receipt are two important documents as far as business transactions is concerned.

Invoice and Receipt are two different documents and does not serve the same purpose. However, some people tends to mix the usage up.

An INVOICE is a document sent by a seller to a buyer formally requesting payment for goods or services.

Invoice lists goods or services, price, and terms before money changes hands.

Invoices outlines the details of a transaction with a customer, including quantities and prices of goods or services provided.

RECEIPTS on the other hand are documents that are provided to customers as proof of payment of goods contained in an invoice.

A receipt is proof evidencing that payment was made for the goods purchased or the services rendered; receipts are issued after the transaction is fully completed.

It is noteworthy to know that while the purpose of an INVOICE is to request payment for goods or services provided as outlined in the Invoice, a RECEIPT is proof of purchase and acknowledgement of client or customer's payment received by the seller.

The best thing is to issue receipts to customers after the list of items or goods contained in invoices are paid.

Invoice is not a prove of payment for the goods. Only a receipt can serve that purpose.

When next you're issued with a document titled "INVOICE" after you made payment for the goods you have purchased, call the attention of the seller to the fact that you supposed to be issued with a Receipt and not invoice.
