Don't start your foundation without knowing this.

Foundation is not where you “hope for the best”.

If something is wrong here, the building will expose it later.

These are signs I tell clients to watch closely on site.

1. They are mixing concrete by eye, not by measurement

If you hear things like:

“Add two more headpan of sand”
“Reduce cement small”

That is a red flag.

Concrete is not cooked like soup.

If there is no clear mix ratio and no proper measurement, the strength will be inconsistent.

Today’s mix is strong, tomorrow’s is weak.

You won’t see it immediately, but that foundation is already compromised.

2. Trench is not uniform or looks careless

Walk round the site.

Some parts deep, some parts shallow.

Some straight, some rough.

That is a problem.

Foundation must sit on consistent depth and width so the load is evenly distributed.

If excavation is uneven, one part of the building will settle differently from another.

That is how cracks start later.

3. Blocks are breaking easily during laying

Watch how blocks behave.

If blocks are cracking, chipping or breaking too easily while laying them, that is not normal.

Good blocks should be firm.

Weak blocks at foundation level are dangerous because that is where everything starts from.

If the base material is weak, the wall above will inherit the problem.

4. Water is gathering inside the trench and nobody is concerned

If you see water sitting inside foundation trench and work is still going on like nothing is wrong, take it seriously.

Water affects the soil strength.

It can weaken the base and affect how the foundation settles.

Proper work should address it first, either by dewatering or stabilizing the base before pouring concrete.

Ignoring it is how future settlement problems start.

The truth is simple:

You don’t need to be an engineer to notice when something is off.

Just paying attention at foundation stage can save you from expensive corrections later.
