Move to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and Get Happy!
CHERISHING THE ‘BURGH
“I love Los Angeles. I love Hollywood. They're beautiful. Everybody's plastic, but I love plastic. I want to be plastic.”…Andy Warhol
In 1975 I couldn’t wait to leave Pittsburgh. I met a (somewhat) famous singer, cancelled my wedding, packed my bags, quit my job at the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad, and headed for the unknown in New York City. I was so excited I couldn’t breathe, and I boarded my plane that day dressed in pale blue and white pinstripes, spiked heels and a movie star hat that Audrey Hepburn would have been jealous of.
Upon arriving at the LaGuardia Airport to meet my boyfriend Rick, he didn’t recognize me----he walked right past me to search for the unpretentious blonde girl he’d recently met at the Pittsburgh (Monroeville) Holiday Inn while performing there months before.
“You look better than most of the women walking the street in Manhattan” he said as he helped me with my luggage.
His statement puzzled me, as I was always sure that Manhattan was covered in women dressed exactly like I was----classy, cool and tan. Yes, I had even invested in the electric-machine-tan before leaving Pittsburgh.
My most profound memory of New York City is one of extreme anguish and disappointment in its citizens. I remember standing on a street corner in Manhattan, lost by myself and seeking any sort of assistance from anyone on where to go and how to find the correct subway to my destination. No one would speak to me. I kept walking up to people and they kept ignoring me like I had the plague. In fact, they kept on walking as I was trying to stop them in the street. I felt like I was committing a crime, and soon realized that I had become a nuisance to every single person I attempted to corner for assistance.
I never did get anyone to help me; I ended up hopping a taxi so I could quickly get the hell out of the way of the crowds of menacing stares.
Rick explained later that New Yorkers had become so paranoid about being mugged on the street that they no longer stopped moving for anyone, thus the continuous stream of robotic bodies that swayed and bustled along the streets of Manhattan like long lines of ants on their way to their ant hill----amazing sight.
One afternoon while strolling down 42ND Street with Rick to look for a movie theater, I almost tripped on a man who was lying in the middle of the sidewalk. He looked dead to me. People were stepping over him, no one stopped, and no one cared to interfere. I was shocked and saddened by the callous display.
Needless to say I’ve been turned off by big cities ever since I first embarked on what I had originally thought would be a fabulous adventure.
Toronto, Ontario….same thing. Big, blustery and unfriendly global town. Oh yes, back in the seventies it was trendy thinking to venture out into these unknown worlds of melting pot people and cultures, but the older I got, the more I wanted my home town of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania with it’s neighborhoods.
I returned to Pittsburgh in 1979, and I returned with a love for my home town like I’d never felt before. I missed everything about it, but mostly the neighborhoods…

Pittsburgh is all about neighborhoods. Each one sublime in its structure and history. Each one with a taste of its original ethnicity and culture, and each one fearlessly fighting to maintain its values in a world gone mad---- a world gone astray from traditions.
Pittsburgh has held tight to traditions. Our beloved Steelers football team, our pierogies, our Mancini’s bread, our Primanti sandwiches, our family traditions----on and on I can go with mentions of what we value here in Pittsburgh.
Our Strip District. No, it’s not an area for strip clubs. It’s a market district within the city limits that has history from the early nineteenth century, and we Pittsburghers do affectionately refer to it as just THE STRIP. The original Primanti Brothers restaurant is housed in The Strip, along with multitudes of other quaint shops and businesses that reflect the culture of Pittsburgh. A big bold emphasis on the Italian side of things in The Strip, where you can find food you may never find anywhere else on earth today.
Don’t take my word for it, as I am writing this piece only to shout out the wonderfulness of a city that I momentarily stopped loving to death at one point in my life. It’s a healing I guess----an apology to my home town that I owe.
You can however, buy all of Rick Sebak’s documentaries about Pittsburgh’s history. He is our official ambassador. Well, if no one has named him that, I’m giving him that title right here and now….done.
You will be mesmerized with his telling of our town’s history, in great detail and with a friendly flavor that makes you want to visit every single thing he speaks of. Oh, and his hypnotic voice has been known to capture his audience and not let them go. His documentaries are like good movies----the ones that you watch over and over and never get bored.
Rick Sebak can be found at WQED TV in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. All of his adventures are loaded with the substance that makes Pittsburgh what it is.
Yes, I’ll suggest you start your adventure with Rick Sebak’s DVD---- IT’S THE NEIGHBORHOODS!
NO TOWN FOR PASSIVITY
“It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood and a beautiful day for a neighbor”…..Fred Rogers
Pittsburghers are confrontational, in your face and in your neighborhood.
I haven’t met many Pittsburghers that lack the ability to converse or tell you exactly what they think about any issue. We are just the opposite. If you want to carry on a conversation with a native Pittsburgher, be prepared to hear a lengthy, detailed, heartfelt explanation, as we Pittsburghers are real people. We do not possess the ability to hide our emotions, or fake our feelings. We will tell you how it is, then leave you to decide whether you like it or not, and if you don’t like it, we don’t care. We are entrenched in our way of life here in Pittsburgh, and if you’re not going to embrace it with us, then you can go on your merry way and do your own thing----no hard feelings.
We are politically incorrect in many ways here in Pittsburgh. We tend to not follow trends and to care less about influences from the media and hype baiters. Pittsburghers are rare individuals who actually think for themselves and make their own decisions based on their upbringing and their learned values. This I can tell you is a Pittsburgh tradition, and it is passed along from generation to generation in families.
Pittsburghers have some of the best common sense I’ve ever experienced, and they are not impressed. It takes a lot to impress someone from Pittsburgh, and the perfect example of this would be when Tom Cruise came to town….
There’s been a lot of filming going on in Pittsburgh lately. On one trip to film here, Tom Cruise and his family visited the Soergel Orchard and market in Wexford, an area North of Pittsburgh. No one bothered him.
I am quite sure that if he lived in Pittsburgh that he’d be welcomed as a neighbor, and neighbor status means if you need help your neighbor will pitch in.

THIS IS SUPERB FOLKS, DONATE AND THEN SEND OUR POTUS A NOTICE THAT WE EXPECT MORE THAN GOVERNMENT!!!!
VETERANS ARE NUMBER ONE, NOT POLITICIANS, NOT EVER!!
DONATE IF YOU CAN!!
This is one American who genuinely needs our support. It’s appalling that we don’t have an army of investigators doing what he’s doing single-handedly, but citizen warriors have always saved this country, while our government does what governments do. Nothing.
Donate!
A video shared this Corpus Christi by Father Jorge Enrique Mújica shows an iPhone camera "recognizing Jesus present in the Eucharist."
When pointing the iPhone camera at the monstrance with the consecrated host, the device's person detection system automatically identifies the Blessed Sacrament as a person, locks the focus, and displays a yellow frame around the host, just as it would when recognizing a human face✝️

@1776General_ This is horrifying! I have a feeling people will be taking matters into their own hands very shortly. The government will do nothing. Prayers for this woman and her child.
Ruby doesn’t know she was surrendered.
She doesn’t know a decision was made.
She only knows her family disappeared.
A volunteer took her out expecting to comfort a scared dog and ended up sitting on the floor with her while she pressed in close, buried her face, and quietly asked not to be left again.
Ruby is a 1-year-old Shepherd / Belgian Malinois mix. Housebroken. Good with kids. Good with other dogs.
She’s at Cobb County Animal Services in Marietta, GA.
One share can be the difference between another night in a kennel and somebody saying come on girl, let’s go home.
