4⃣ The aorta gives off anterior branches outside the liver, whereas the IVC lacks prominent anterior tributaries.
Therefore, if you see vessels arising anteriorly toward the ultrasound beam in a subxiphoid view, you’re looking at the aorta, not the IVC.
