|| Why 108 Is So Auspicious? We have always chanted the mantra 108 times, but why? ||

Number 108 has significance in almost every ritual followed in Hinduism. You must have heard ‘Shri 108’ to represent yogis, preceptors, and divine and highly learned gurus.

Vedic sages of later era devised a Vyjanti mala with 108 beads to keep count of mantras in their daily ritual of meditation.

But the question is why it is so Auspicious?

Well, there could be many possible reasons, few are-

According to Vedic cosmology, the number 108 is the basis of creation. It also represents our universe, the whole of our existence. It is a number that resonates throughout the universe. But How?

1‐ Stands for supreme truth or god consciousness.
0 ‐stands for nothing or emptiness or void.
8‐ Stand for eternity or infinity.

If we rotate 8 by 90 degrees, either way, you get the symbol of infinity. Infinity can be defined as if we take infinity out of infinity, it will still remain infinity and this is exactly the definition of Brahman (ब्रह्मन्).

And 0 and 1 are the binary numbers, the building blocks of any program. Which are Purush (atman) & Prakriti (nature) as per the Hindu philosophy.

When Purus, Prakriti, and Brahman (not the caste Brahmin but all-pervading energy) are combined together represent wholeness. Hence 108 is considered to be a complete number in Hindu philosophy.

Vedic cosmology states that the diameter of the Sun is 108 times that of the earth, the distance between the earth and the sun is 108 times the diameter of the sun & distance between the earth and the moon is 108 times the diameter of the moon.

As per modern science, diameter of the Sun is 109.11 times that of the earth, the distance between the earth and the sun is 107.469 times the diameter of the sun and distance between the earth and the moon is 110.651 times the diameter of the moon. These minor differences can be considered as the human errors. This thing is written in our scripture thousands of year back.

The main aim of chanting the mantra is to get united with cosmic energy (brahman) to complete ourselves. This is why every important rituals of mantra is done by 108.

Some more interesting points on 108:

• 108 styles of meditations in Pranayama
• Average human breathes 21600 times in 24 hours. Half in solar energy and half in lunar energy which is 10800 (108*100). This is the basis of life itself.
• The heart chakra(out of 7 chakras) contains 108 Nadis.
• 108 Upanishads.
• In Buddhism there are 108 lies, 108 earthly desires and 108 delusions of Mind.
• 12 constellations * 9 planets = 108 (Planet X is the 9th planet not Pluto).

ह्रीं = मायाबीज Maya

क्रीं = कालीबीज Maa Kali
दूं = दुर्गाबीज Ma Durga

गं = गणपति बीज Ganpati

C) Structure of a Mantra

Example ॐ गं गणपतये नमः ।

Pranav (ॐ) = Beej में प्राण फूंकने के लिए
Beej (गं)= Zipped Complete info of Seed Diety
Diety (गणपतये) = Addressee Diety
Pallav (नमः) = Defines the Purpose of Mantra.

D) Purpose of a Mantra

PALLAV: नमः , स्वाहा, स्वधा , वषट , वौषट, हुम् , फट
Defines the Purpose of Mantra.

नमः - salutation of Jivatma to the Diety
स्वाहा- Final filter for annihilating -ve Energies of Offering before teleporting it to Diety
स्वधा-offering to Ancestors to fulfil their desires to end their Karmic Cycle
वषट -to Control & Channelise Energy Mantra
हुम् -generate a सुरक्षा कवच
वौषट- give powers Like hypnotism Divya Drishti
फट -It is like pressing missile button to Launch Mantra power
Gayatri Mantra is pure reference to Omni present Brahma, Pallav is Absent
