India took five steps against Pakistan in response to the Pahalgam attack.

1. Put the Indus Water Treaty in Abeyance. In 1960, India and Pakistan signed the Indus Water Treaty to regulate the flow of water from rivers such as the Indus, Chenab, and Jhelum. The water flow from these rivers is crucial for 90% of Pakistan's agricultural sector.

2. Suspend the Attari Wagah border. The Integrated Check Post Attari will be closed immediately. Those who have crossed over may return through that route before 1 May. The border previously allowed limited cross-border trade and travel, but that is now over.

3. SAARC Visas Cancelled: Pakistanis will not be permitted to travel to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme. The scheme, which has been in place since 1992, facilitates travel across South Asia for specific purposes. It was used by politicians, journalists, and others.

4. Defence Advisers Removed. Pakistan's High Commission in India includes military officers who represent the country's army, air force, and navy. These officers have been declared persona non grata(unwelcome), a severe diplomatic step countries take to remove foreign officials.

5. Pakistani diplomats to return home. The overall strength of the High Commissions will be reduced to 30 from the current 55. This means both India and Pakistan will withdraw diplomats from each other's countries.

I am deeply saddened by the news of the tragic terrorist attack that took place today at Baisaran, Pahalgam, Anantnag region of Jammu and Kashmir, often known as "Mini Switzerland."
