Most of the industries under Bengali ownership that were closed down by CPI(M) were established and run by East Bengalis.

Bengal Chemicals, Calcutta Chemicals, Bengal Lamps, Krishna Glass; I could go on and on.

The names of the Ghoti politicians you mentioned above were the very ones who destroyed Bengali enterprise and capital in West Bengal and turned trade and commerce into a Marwari monopoly that made fortunes standing on the graves of destroyed Bengali enterprises.

Unlike the CPI(M) and the TMC, at least the Bengal Congress patronised Bengali capitalists over non‑Bengali baniyas.

I can give a whole list of Bengali industrialists who were members of the Congress party and became MPs/MLAs.

1. The Congress candidate in 1952 from the Calcutta South East constituency was Mrigankamohan Sur.

2. In Nabadwip, the INC MP in 1953 was Ila Pal Choudhury.

3. Bankura’s MP was Jagannath Koley.

All three were prominent businessmen/industrialists of that era.

Ila Pal Choudhury’s Small Tools Manufacturing Company was brought to its knees in 1968 by the UF government. Within a year of their strikes, their turnover came down from 93 lakhs to 60 lakhs…

Jagannath Koley’s Koley Biscuits was destroyed by Left trade unions. The final nail in the coffin came when Chandan Basu became the contract manufacturer of Britannia.

4. The Saha family, which owned Bharat Batteries, was chased by CITU mobs for two weeks. Their house was gheraoed for a week.

5. Krishna Silicates and Glass. IIRC, in the mid‑1960s it was the fourth largest glassmaker in India.

In 1968, CPI(M) and SUCI’s unions went on a rampage. Their factory office in Jadavpur was set on fire. By the early 1980s they were gone.

Bengal Lamps met the same fate.

6. Calcutta Chemicals, another Bengali‑owned concern, was thriving in the 1960s. In 1967, its turnover was over 3 crore.

From 1969 onwards, Left unions went on a rampage. By 1980, it was done and dusted.

7. The destruction of Biren Mookerjee’s Martin Burn:

In 1965, Martin Burn was India’s third‑largest conglomerate. By 1970, its production had fallen to one‑third of its peak production in 1966. Within two years, it was gone.

The communists hardly organised strikes at TATA/TISCO in Jamshedpur, despite Jamshedpur being a CPI(M) stronghold.

Now look at the Left Front’s record: under their tenure, most of the public–private partnerships and joint ventures between the West Bengal government and the private sector involved Marwaris.

The only exception was Haldia Petrochemicals, where Purnendu Chatterjee was a big stakeholder.

Every big real‑estate project on EM Bypass and Rajarhat had a Marwari developer.

But look at the standalone apartments in South Kolkata from Jadavpur to Sonarpur; they were all built by Bengali promoters. The gated communities, however, were all Marwari‑driven.

Even the Bantala Leather Complex was built by the Dalmias.

Metro Dairy was a JV between the Bengal government and the Jalans of Keventers.

Big brick‑and‑mortar retail chains, food‑processing units, agro‑industries, dairies—all these came under Marwari control during Jyoti Basu’s era.

Hotels, pubs, malls, multiplexes, film production, media (leaving out ABP and the chit‑fund companies), and even football clubs are now Marwari‑dominated.

One only has to drive along BT Road or the Garia–Narendrapur stretch to see the legacy of the Left.

The only Bengali enterprises that came up under the patronage of the Left were the chit‑funds.

For everything else, it was an alliance between Dhando‑Seth‑types and Marxist rent‑seekers. Dealers of cement in Burrabazar became real‑estate barons by greasing the palms of Kanti Ganguly.
