CCTV footage shows that IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode was cheating in the examination using a mobile phone. He later handed over the phone to the invigilator, Professor Suryanarayan Doolla.

And this is what IIT Bombay said: no disciplinary action was taken against Sahil. The instructor and Head of Department spoke to him, counselled him, and assured him that the incident would not adversely affect his academic career.

And today, a police case has been registered against the same Professor Suryanarayan Doolla, with provisions of the SC/ST Act invoked, following a complaint by Sahil’s parents.

IIT Bombay’s SC/ST Cell also said that it had received no complaint from Sahil alleging caste-based discrimination.

Should every incident automatically be viewed through the lens of caste?

If the facts show cheating, then cheating is cheating. Calling it casteism does not change what happened in the examination.

Should we defend cheating simply because caste has entered the narrative?

Facts remain facts, no matter how many labels are added to them.

This is the image of Vettuvan Koil, located in the village called Kalugumalai in Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) district in TN.

This was built in 800 CE by the Pandyan king Parantaka Nedunjadaiyan.

And this might have been one the of few temples or monuments in history, which was the output of an Architectural Dance-off between two powerful empires.

You see in 800CE, the Early Pandyans were neighbours of the most powerful empire in India at that time, the Rashtrakutas.

I guess some bilateral summit or a G-20 type of gathering might have happened in that time, which bought the kings of Pandyan and Rashtrakutas together.

Now the Rashtrakutas, would have wanted to show off their architectural wonder called the Kailasa temple, the rock cut temple that was carved out of a single hill.

I guess Nedunjadaiyan. saw it and told to his aides, "I have to get one of these", then went back and started the construction of the Vettuvan koil in Kalugumalai.

Unfortunately, due to shifting priorities, change of Kings in 815 CE and other factors, the construction of Vettuvan koil was never completed, and it stays incomplete till this date.

But it is fascinating to know, 1250 years ago in India, apart from battles and wars of conquest, there was an temple build-off, between two great empires, in two locations, 1500 Kms away from each other

Charging 3.5 lakhs for a phone is not strategy anymore. It is greed dressed up as innovation.

At some point, premium stops being about creating disproportionate value and starts becoming about testing how much the market is willing to tolerate.
