Imagine using AI to create pale-skinned white men in the Sahara wearing traditional African hairstyles and presenting them as “pre-Islamic Berbers.” As someone who critically studies African history, I honestly find that laughable.

Yes, pre-Islamic Berbers—especially the Numidians—were known for distinctive curled and coiled hairstyles. North African cavalrymen and royal figures are often shown with short, tightly coiled ringlets of natural hair, styles that can be compared to ancient Egyptian and Kushite hair traditions. These hairstyles were sometimes maintained with natural oils and could be decorated with headbands, beads, or other adornments.

What makes the AI image ridiculous is that these hairstyles continued into the 19th and 20th centuries among darker-skinned Berber groups, not among the pale Berbers who often reflect later layers of Vandal, Greco-Roman, Arab, or Mediterranean ancestry. If we are talking about the original Berber populations of North Africa, then the darker-skinned Berbers shown in historical images are a far better representation.

You can still see those older Numidian-style hairstyles among darker-skinned Berbers, but you will not commonly find them among the pale-skinned groups people keep trying to present as the “original” Berbers. That is why these AI reconstructions are misleading. They erase the African appearance and cultural continuity of the ancient Berber peoples and replace it with a Eurocentric fantasy.
