@BeckyLTuch WAIT…you mean we can't just command-F for em-dashes and call it a day anymore?
The best, and imperfect, and exhausting method is to interrogate the author. Anyone who has truly written a short story or poem has sat with every line, can tell you the backstory of each choice.
@BeckyLTuch Ooof. "Hire our editors for $250 after we just rejected you" is quite a dominance flex.
Contributors to our upcoming anthology don't pay a penny to submit, and we pay them $ + copies…but we do ask for proof that they willingly ended their federal careers.
Double ooof.
Super excited to share our brand new, 2026 ONE ART Haiku Anthology! Thanks again to everyone that sent in their haiku and congratulations to the incredible poems and poets curated this year!
As always, I hope you’ll share it even with friends that aren’t “into poetry”…YET! 😈 @OneArtPoetry1@MarkDanowsky
Now or never, gang. If you resigned or retired from the US government last year, you have just this weekend to submit your letter to our federal resignations anthology.

"I opted for deferred resignation. I am okay with my choice, but I don't think I will ever be okay with how/why it happened. It feels a little like closing a good book mid-chapter."
–IRS employee, resignation letter (excerpt)

Dear Editor,
I see you ask for short stories not to exceed 5,000 words.
Enclosed, please find my 25,000 word novella, a labor of love which unfortunately I am not able to shorten at this time.
1. When you write something intended to be read by an important person, go through it and cut every unnecessary word.
2. The reader of anything you publish is an important person.
We are currently open for submissions.

Here are a few we've received so far:
This spring, we will publish a book full of brave acts. Dozens of federal employees resigned from their jobs rather than carry out policies they felt were illegal or un-American.
They gave up their paychecks. Some gave up their pensions.
We are in quiet awe of these letters.
