We co-hosted a WBTC community discussion last night on X Spaces with @weremeow, @loi_luu, @mikebelshe. Thank you to the hundreds who participated live and the thousands who tuned in after.

BitGo recapped the WBTC new multi-jurisdictional, multi-institutional custody transition plan and underscored the importance of this upgrade. The current WBTC merchant base is 100% non-US with WBTC holders located all around the globe. This led to a lively discussion of risk, how WBTC mitigates those risks historically and how WBTC has evolved to mitigate more risks over time.

One high-priority concern for the community was the risk associated with the backup key as part of this change. The community challenged us to find a better way to segregate the 3rd key such that no single party had potential access to two keys. We’re listening.

Since the time BitGo & BiT Global originally contemplated the new custody setup, BitGo has been granted a MPI license under the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Our original design did not contemplate the use of BitGo Singapore Ltd since it did not yet exist. Given the community feedback, however, we can now solve the challenge presented. To address those concerns, the 3rd key will not be held with BiT Global; and will instead be stored in BitGo Singapore Ltd. We believe this addresses the community concern and further increases the security of WBTC.

Here are side-by-side comparisons of the different models for the multi-sig:

The new multi-jurisdictional, multi-institutional model shares the same proven underlying cold-storage multi-sig security technology, the same Trust Company operational playbook, the same physical vault requirements, and the same geographic key distribution. However, we’re now able to add a 3rd institution into the mix, enhancing security and reducing risk.

We look forward to working with the WBTC community, WBTC DAO, and leaders from top DeFi projects to audit the go-forward configuration.

We believe the concentration of backing assets for DeFi wrapped tokens, BTC and ETH ETFs under the control of a single brand is incompatible with true decentralization:
• digital asset exchanges should use independent custodians to avoid concentration risks
• crypto is global and should not be controlled in a single jurisdiction

The discussion last night was a great example of the community coming together to discuss safety, risk, and decentralization. There is more work to do in the final details of this plan, but working together, we came up with an even better plan.

It has been a privilege to help secure WBTC on behalf of the community for the last 5 years as it grew to a $10B asset. We look forward to continuing this path for the next 5 years as it grows even further.
