Why do @FIFAWorldCup and the free press bend over backwards to protect the Islamic Republic? The fact that cameras at the World Cup purposely cut off the shots of Iran fans to exclude their Lion and Sun flags is baffling. We should not have to convince anyone to care about the horrors this regime has inflicted on innocent Iranians for decades.
Every President has thought they can change the nature of the radical Iranian government. The only way to get positive change is if the regime collapses. Thus, not a single penny should go to help rebuild Iran with the Ayatollah’s in charge.
You are absolutely right, Mr. @RepDonBacon. Terrorism and warmongering are in this regime’s DNA. As long as it exists, Iran and the world will remain at risk. Appeasement of the Islamic Republic has been a failed policy for decades.
President Trump has gone from America First to Iran First.
He stopped the war early, got cornered when Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, and cut a deal: a $300 billion bribe, unfrozen assets, and their oil profits back. Then he handed negotiations to a naive Vice President and guys who'd be better off buying you an office building in Alexandria.
What about the Iranian people? We promised to help them. Among other things, we should have armed them (the Reagan Doctrine). What now? Anything? The MOU is silent.
What about the Lebanese Christians, who have wanted to be rid of Hezbollah for 40-years and take back their country from Iran? The MOU ensures Hezbollah's (meaning Iran's) continuing control over that country, and existential threat to Israel.
Mojtaba—or whoever is speaking on his behalf—did not take responsibility for the MoU. He said he opposed it but allowed it to be signed because others insisted, a tactic his father often used.
He also pinned the deal on Pezeshkian rather than Ghalibaf. If he believes this agreement will end well, then he is effectively promoting Pezeshkian. If he believes it will end badly, then he sees Pezeshkian as expendable and is hanging the deal around his neck. I think the latter is the case, given his own stance.
VP Vance is right: President Trump did not say he wanted to install Prince Reza Pahlavi and that is a good thing. Iranians can choose their leader, they don’t need a US-installed puppet, and millions of them have called Pahlavi’s name.
The United States should not be in the business of installing leaders in other countries for a variety of reasons, specially because Washington has a poor track record. From Iraq and Afghanistan to Venezuela, US-installed leaders have often been corrupt, incompetent, and unpopular.
That is why any US effort to install the IRGC veteran Bagher Ghalibaf or anyone else as Iran’s new dictator would be reckless and harmful.
What Iranians are asking is not for Washington to choose their leader. They are asking the United States not to enrich their murderers.
Prince Reza Pahlavi has arrived in the United Kingdom with a clear message: the Islamic Republic does not represent the Iranian people.
Lord Maurice Glasman, member of the House of Lords, escorts Prince Reza Pahlavi into Parliament for meetings.
Any attempt to treat this regime as a legitimate partner will only prolong its survival, deepen the suffering of Iranians, and fuel instability across the region and beyond.
Lasting peace will not come through concessions to a failing regime. It will come through the will of the Iranian people, who seek a free, democratic, and secular Iran.
This morning, I met with @EmilyThornberry Chair of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, and other members of the Committee to discuss the situation inside Iran, the Islamic Republic’s repression of the Iranian people, and the urgent need to place the people of Iran at the centre of UK policy.
I made clear that dealing with a regime that murdered more than 40,000 Iranians in January is not only morally wrong, but strategically misguided.
Any agreement that preserves this regime or its remnants will fail. The Iranian people will not accept it.
With or without international support, the people of Iran will overthrow this regime. Freedom will come to Iran.
