Boss himself, @ID_AA_Carmack is holding what seems like spontaneous Meet & Great with fans at Arcades, and @QuakeCon Family is thrilled to shake hands and talk about various topics with living legend 🍻
@AntonHand@RealtimeVFXMike We were already there for most west coast AAA production especially in LA.
It already was small teams here with contractors and large outsource art teams overseas.
My point is I don't. Contractors get replaced with agentic AI- already are.
a Game Industry Crash that dwarfs 1983
Make a bad game- studio closes
Make a good game- heavy layoffs
Make a great game- acquisition by private equity for aggressive ip licensing and guess what?
Layoffs.
This pattern of every studio getting hit with layoffs or closed immediately after releasing a game is getting very tiring. Really hope something changes soon
True it had to collapse eventually
But what is missed is how hardware is drying out at the same time. We are going backwards for local compute.
The perceived reset in a post AAA world has some big challenges to climb.
We'll see a split where DLSS 5 type tech goes proprietary on next gen consoles and you get access only if you play ball.
Then indies are in a world of acceleratingly expensive hardware.
It's going to be very ugly going through this shift.
@RealtimeVFXMike@AntonHand I don't agree it goes hollywood model but instead gets driven by very small teams and swarms of agentic AI.
Hollywood production model is falling apart out here in LA.
It's not the way to go regardless.
@cybereality@JU5TINCREDlBLE You do, absolutely, they might pull a rabbit out of the hat.
And I hope they do.
Tabor was very fun and they deserve a better scenario as developers.
Whole gaming industry is in for it right now.
There are many more of these scenarios coming, not only for VR, but all gaming
With the founding four of Id Software in Dallas this week, I'm gonna post Id stuff through the weekend, like my copy of the shareware episode of Quake, bought at CompUSA.
OMG, it's happening! 😱
The refreshed version of the VR mod for Resident Evil 4 Remake by Talemann will be released on August 19! 🎉
This new mod completely overhauls the previous version from February 2026, adding (among other things) fullbody IK, a gun holster system, manual reloading and weapon interactions (like gunspinning), manual knife drawing and throwing, as well as Leon's cocky oneliners and rude gestures that stun enemies 😛 Additionally, VR mode will also fully work in the Separate Ways and Mercenaries DLCs.
Get ready for the best version of Resident Evil 4 🤩

@cybereality@JU5TINCREDlBLE Yeah doubt that is the scenario.
This is likely buying runway to not go chapter 7 imo.
All signs point to distressed company.
@cybereality@JU5TINCREDlBLE It's paying bills at a business not going in a personal bank. Won't last long.
Chump change honestly. They are clearly up against the wall.
Many comments online about how LLMs are now good enough to mod AR/VR into any game
Something much more understated/valuable:
XR devices are now so featured-packed, creative people can create FULLY PLAYABLE apps that would only be CONCEPTS thrown in CGI marketing a few years ago
I think winter is correct.
There was a very strong run from the early PCVR heyday into Quest 2 standalone pop that has now collapsed.
Frankly it's what happens when money pours in then retracts.
Tide came in with Facebook acquisition in 2014 and is now out and we see all the large companies dead on the beach.
