Hey @base / @coinbase community — @THEHARGO5 here. I’ve been on Base since day one, a real supporter who believed in what you’re building. After years of grinding small trades to provide for my wife and 3 kids, one upgrade changed everything. On June 14th I lost ~$18k in a malicious dApp drain that I’m convinced would never have happened on the legacy wallet. Transaction hash: 0xf5d3bcc2a5a3ebd308483eeba489c62e1d0f7ed9013c838249e7882f143c1389 Compromised wallet: elhargo.base.eth (0xA2CE40fD39D7ba93804F5EAdf4d9E07a90534b3D) This isn’t just money — it nearly broke me. I took crypto very seriously and the time, effort, and overall daily grind feels like it was for nothing. I’m sharing my full story hoping for fair resolution and to help others avoid the same pain. I’m a 45-year-old dad from Arizona grinding a regular job, just trying to build something better for my family — the stability I never had growing up. I used the legacy wallet for years with zero issues. During Coinbase’s heavy wallet upgrade push (big bright blue “Try the new experience” button in the legacy app-see image below). I finally switched. On June 14th searching for OpenSea in the upgraded version pulled up a site that looked exactly legit. No malicious warning. I connected — and got drained. The new search function which changed briefly after my incident now just forces Google with no populated matches like before-see images below. The dApp I connected to now flagged as malicious. The stress triggered a mental health crisis. I voluntarily checked myself into a hospital for several days at the end of June. I was at my absolute lowest — having thoughts of wanting to end it all. What got me through was thinking about my kids. I’m back home now, fighting every day, focusing on my family, and trying to rebuild. I’ve kept this mostly private and sent Coinbase a formal demand for reimbursement of my actual losses — nothing more however I received the self-custody disclaimer placing responsibility on the user. I’m not here to bash anyone. I still believe in Base/Coinbase and most importantly crypto overall but I am certain had I never used the upgraded version I would still have my funds.
