This is a landmark moment for Inverness and the city of Toledo, an announcement decades in the making. It is the product of steady, purposeful leadership that rebuilt a fractured relationship with the USGA and restored confidence in one of America’s greatest major championship venues.

Many deserve credit for bringing the US Open back to Inverness. The hiring of former Oakmont superintendent John Zimmers was a coup that stunned observers in the golf industry. His expertise has elevated course conditions, and his familiarity with the USGA proved invaluable.
Inverness took a calculated risk on then-little-known architect Andrew Green to oversee a comprehensive restoration, returning the course to the vision of Donald Ross. The result not only revitalized Inverness but helped launch Green’s career, establishing him as one of the most sought-after architects in the game.

The club’s leadership played a critical role. Past president Jerry Lemieux – one of the USGA’s most respected rules officials – brought deep institutional relationships. Head pro JJ Weaver commands enormous respect within the game of golf. Judd Silverman, Richard Hylant and the Inverness team who successfully advocated for the Solheim Cup helped reintroduce the course to a global audience. And the city, led by Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, demonstrated unequivocally that Toledo is worthy of hosting the US Open.

But make no mistake, this day would not have arrived without John Swigart. For the past decade, he made it his mission to return the US Open to Inverness. His leadership positioned the club and restored its standing among golf’s great cathedrals.

Behind the scenes, Swigart served as both strategist and ambassador, tirelessly and thoughtfully advocating for Inverness. His vision made a compelling case not only for the club but for northwest Ohio. Swigart has unlocked economic impact, global visibility and renewed civic pride.
