I think @AlistairBegg misspoke and misapplied the Christian sexual ethic with his advice to attend a gay/transgender wedding.
I also believe that he is one of the most important leaders and voices in modern evangelicalism. He’s been biblically sound and faithful for frankly longer than I’ve been alive. I greatly appreciate him.
Both of the above statements can be true at the same time. In his own words, “The best of men are men at best.”
So, I am personally praying and hoping for a clear, public course correction from him on this issue. Let’s pray to that end.
👎Beware of lists like this about Jesus 👎
Jesus...
- Fed the hungry
- Loved the poor
- Was a brown-skinned, middle-eastern, undocumented immigrant
- Was outraged at systemic injustice
- Elevated women
- Defied the patriarchy
- Eschewed religious power dynamics
- Gave healthcare to those who couldn't afford it
... be like Jesus.
A) While some are true, some of those are a s-t-r-e-t-c-h of gospel narratives
B) Some are DESCRIPTIVE, not PRESCRIPTIVE
C) You can also make a (much less popular) list like this from the gospels...
Jesus...
- Fought for a traditional definition of marriage
- Opposed sex outside heterosexual marriage
- Loved his country
- Defied cultural elites
- Chose 12 *men* to lead the church
- Affirmed gender is defined by biology
- Fought for the infallibility of the Bible
- Said people who didn't believe in him didn't know God
- Was part of a traditional family
- His followers approved the righteousness of military service
... be like Jesus.
Everybody wants to pick and choose aspects of Jesus to make him the mascot of their personal cause. But...
1) Jesus is a Lord, not a mascot. Jesus does not submit himself to our causes. Our causes must submit themselves to Jesus.
2) This is exactly what the 10 commandments forbid in "taking the Lord's name in vain." To put God's name on your flawed cause = to "take the Lord's name in vain."
"For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed... you put up with it readily enough."
–– 2 Corinthians 11v4
"God's mercy is so great that you may sooner drain the sea of its water or deprive the sun of its light than diminish the great mercy of God."
— Charles Spurgeon
Pastors are not meant to be CEOs, celebrities, life coaches, influencers, reality stars, brand managers, cultural commentators, or politicians.
They are teachers.
They are preachers.
They are counselors.
They are prayer warriors.
They are shepherds.
@PastorAVman I had a colostomy for most of '21 & '22. It's amazing what you can do if you have to. I am so thankful for God's grace, my family, and a loving church. Please let Joseph know that he and the family are in our prayers 🙏
A small church with sound doctrine is much healthier and on surer footing than a 10,000 member church with shallow doctrine.
Effectiveness for the kingdom should never be gauged by the size of the church but by its faithfulness to the truth.
Here is some unsolicited advice for young men:
1. Pursue Christ
2. Seek out a Godly woman that pursues Christ
3. Marry that woman
4. Build a family with that women
5. Lead, love, and protect that family well, teaching them to pursue Christ
6. Die
