Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias says the Chicago Tribune story about ICE detaining a Chicago Public Schools custodian breaks his heart.

It breaks our hearts too.

It breaks our hearts for Deanna Marie Kulovitz and Prince Jermale Sullivan, De La Salle Institute Class of 2020 alumni, who lost their lives in the tragic November 23, 2025, Lake Shore Drive crash.

The registered owner of the vehicle involved, Miguel Angel Navarrete Palacios, was later taken into ICE custody and has been identified by federal authorities as an undocumented immigrant.

In my opinion, Illinois residents deserve answers about the state’s driver’s license policies and how they are administered. Many Illinois residents believe Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias should face greater public scrutiny over those policies, and based on his record, many Chicago Citizens do not believe he should run for Mayor of Chicago.

Illinois families deserve accountability, transparency, and leadership that puts public safety first.

Katie's killer, an intoxicated illegal immigrant, was able to obtain auto insurance through a third-party scheme.
After Katie was killed, the insurer denied the claim, alleging it had been defrauded and then walked away.

Illinois never bothered to look deeper into arrangements like this. How many more are out there?

A federal judge just ruled that Illinois girls have no civil right to bathrooms without biological males.

Sex-segregated facilities are optional under federal law, and Title IX does not require them. Schools may let boys who identify as girls use the girls’ room, and Illinois already forces them to allow it.

When a Bolingbrook High School girl walked in and found a male student there, the court treated her anxiety as speculative. Her discomfort is not considered a valid reason to limit access.

Girls lost the right to a single-sex bathroom.

Boys gained the right to walk in.

And the court called it equality.

.@GovPritzker, several months ago I ran into Laura Fine, the Democratic state senator for my district (IL-09).

She knew nothing about Katie or the circumstances surrounding her death.

But the moment I asked whether there was any way ballots could be tied to illegal immigrants, the conversation, and her tone, immediately changed.

Her response wasn't concern or an explanation.
It was basically: "Prove it."

That's an inversion of responsibility.

Citizens shouldn't have to prove government systems are trustworthy. Government has the responsibility to demonstrate that they are through transparency, verifiable data, independent audits, and strong internal controls.

Not to mention Governor you spent years promoting Illinois as a welcoming sanctuary state without acknowledging the tradeoffs or the risks.
My family lives with one of those tradeoffs every day.

So when you tell Illinoisans to simply accept your assurances about another public institution, don't expect trust to come automatically.

As a lifelong Illinoisan, your words ring hollow.

Trust isn't earned by dismissing questions.
It's earned by answering them.

Julio Cucul-Bol was issued an Illinois driver's license under the alias Juan Jahaziel Saenz Suarez, and that Illinois driver's license number appears in the Urbana Police report.
Federal prosecutors later alleged he used that false identity.

Instead of transparency, my family has had to work with Judicial Watch to sue Urbana for records so we can understand exactly what happened.

The officials you criticize, @Jim_Jordan, @RepMaryMiller, and @JeanneIves, have shown my family compassion and have tried to get us answers. You never did.

So answer a simple question: Did your office issue an Illinois driver's license to Juan Jahaziel Saenz Suarez or not? If not, was the Urbana Police report wrong?
Katie deserved transparency. So do the people of Illinois.

If your DMV can't verify something as fundamental as a person's identity before issuing an Illinois driver's license, why should Illinois residents trust it with public safety?

Release the records. Let the facts speak for themselves.

According to a recent study by WalletHub, Illinoisans pay the highest taxes and fees in the nation, 53% more in taxes than the U.S. average. Meanwhile, a recent WalletHub study showed Illinois dead last in the nation in economic equity.

Minorities, the poor and others who support Pritzkers so called progressive agenda have been taken for granted as Illinois most expensive and expansive government has done little to improve economic conditions and opportunities for its poorest residents.

Illinois third ranking among states in the exodus of residents includes a second ranking for Black residents leaving, while Chicago’s lost more Black residents than any major American city since 2000. No coincidence that they’re overwhelmingly middle income families with school age children.

Any agenda that continuously raises taxes and fees, whose nation leading property taxes drives residents out of their homes and apartments, consistently expands government dependency, returns violent criminals to the streets and denies quality school choice, is not an equity agenda.

Don’t expect Illinois current leaders to reassesses their policies as an increasing percentage of those remaining as well as those arriving, including tens of thousands of international migrants, are government dependent and will continue to vote for the current leadership.
