Generally, I think small, exploratory, offshoot colonies with precarious supplies and rate-limited ability to grow/filter more food/clean water, would be loathe to shoot any kind of weapon, let alone a globally-destructive weapon, back at their home planet to decimate the population-- their only hope of getting their next supply restock on schedule is the continued activity of humans and society back on Earth.

But if a crazy person were to somehow get past all of the psychological screenings to be selected as part of the small initial cohort of humans to get to go to Mars, and managed to somehow smuggle with them a weapon that can decimate Earth from an interplanetary distance? Unlikely.

But more realistically, maybe if that crazy, genocidal person repurposes, say, a nuke capable of accurate, independent space flight meant to get it to a specific set of coordinates above Mars to be detonated deliberately as part of a terraforming plan. I guess that person could theoretically reprogram it to fly to Earth, maybe, if it can travel that far on its own between planets, which I don't think is likely.

But! Even if they could and wanted to, it would be slow species suicide for a small Mars cohort to cause an Earth cataclysm to kill off all the humans only to return and 'inherit the Earth' because of known minimum human survivor population numbers needed to avoid inbreeding species failure within two or three generations from the lack of genetic diversity (depending on how many women vs men you have in your small group).

But just as my final thought, mosttt people don't walk around with planetary genocide envisioned as their ultimate utopia. Especially not people who are getting through all the psychological screenings involved in being selected as an astronaut on the pioneer Mars crew. I imagine anyone getting to go would be pretty fascinated by where they are, and plenty busy. Plus, if they'd wanted to stay on Earth, they'd still be on Earth.

Also, I don't think some genocidal nutcase who detonates a nuke meant for starting to terraform Mars back toward Earth in front of the others in his Mars cohort is going to live long enough to fly any shuttle back to Earth. All his colleagues will just have watched him deliberately set out to kill everyone they ever lived back on Earth. That guy has to know he just committed suicide by group.

Population growth depends on where/who the growth comes from. As Mark Steyn has said, "the future belongs to those that show up".

That said, Western Civ isn't showing up for it. Those that are showing up don't seem likely to maintain Western Civ.

Add to that is growing doubt about what future generations will actually do. People need meaning and purpose: nurturing a family, meaningful work, leaving the world a better place... "world peace".

I don't think AI is the immediate threat but it is a threat, especially when coupled with improving (and cheaper) robotics. (Somewhere between 4-6 million people are employed driving commercial vehicles so it's pretty easy to imagine a couple million being unemployed as self-driving vehicles are introduced - not as far off as we'd like to believe.)

Lying around scrolling TikTok, video games, being stoned can be recreational but hardly supports civil society. A Clockwork Orange.
