A few weeks post storm and we're heading into the 'lean' time of year . The #Binevenagh #RedSquirrels have been hitting the monitoring stations hard!

With skiffs of snow this week, Ranger volunteer Tristan Bane was on the case snapping our #RedSquirrels.

Right now, they are gearing up for breeding time, so he saw plenty of chasing activity between snacks!

Although well intentioned, some members of public have taken to putting foods out in Downhill Forest. This has resulted in an explosion of both grey squirrel and brown rat populations. Residents & surrounding land owners are now having real problems at their homes and farms...

There is no need to put bird food out in woodlands, there is plenty of natural foods, all this does is unnaturally increase populations of Invasive species and problem rodents. Please, if anyone has any knowledge of who is doing this, please ask them to stop!

What an amazing response to the petition. Thank you for signing. Although the ask is to the Welsh Government, the virus affects red squirrels in Scotland, England and Ireland too. This example is an animal in northern Cumbria. Heart-breaking. Lets end this

@conormcquillan @UlsterWildlife We're happy to set up monitoring and support grey removal if you want to DM us. Existing Red populations are good enough to expand into them if connectivity good and remains grey free.

@conormcquillan @UlsterWildlife You'd need to have a support mechanism in place (ie functioning Red Squirrel Group) to maintain area and buffer as grey free.
This is assuming the site is large enough and in a viable condition to support.
Any releases or relocations are then subject to full licencing from NIEA.
