A pleasure to share this piece in Nature Chemistry, in which I discuss the limited diversity of chemical space and propose two strategies to expand it. https://t.co/iHnSu4zxDR #chemistry#AI
Individual workflows excel at simple tasks but falter when tasks become complex due to cognitive limits. Collective workflows shine in areas like biodiversity and learning, but risk echo chambers that block information flow. Striking a balance is essential @cgershen@cesifoti
In the 1960s families spent about 1/3 of their income in food, motivating a poverty line of food expenditures x 3.
Today that factor would be 16. This article by @profplum99 explores in detail how to think about poverty lines in a world where our needs have changed.

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado has led the struggle for democracy in the face of ever-expanding authoritarianism in Venezuela. Ms Machado studied engineering and finance, and had a short career in business. In 1992 she established the Atenea Foundation, which works to benefit street children in Caracas.
Ten years later she was one of the founders of Súmate, which promotes free and fair elections and has conducted training and election monitoring. In 2010 she was elected to the National Assembly, winning a record number of votes. The regime expelled her from office in 2014. Ms Machado leads the Vente Venezuela opposition party and in 2017 helped found the Soy Venezuela alliance, which unites pro-democracy forces in the country across political dividing lines.
In 2023 she announced her candidacy for president in the 2024 presidential election. When she was blocked from running, she supported the opposition’s alternative candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. The opposition mobilised widely and collected systematic documentation that it was the true winner of the election. The regime declared victory and tightened its grip on power.
Ms Machado is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize first and foremost for her efforts to advance democracy in Venezuela. But democracy is also in retreat internationally. Democracy – understood as the right to freely express one’s opinion, to cast one’s vote and to be represented in elective government – is the foundation of peace both within countries and between countries.

@otrasenda_AC Exactly! Like a monoculture supported by fertilizers or irrigation—efficient but fragile. Once the flow stops, collapse happens quickly. In society, our “artificial flows” are algorithms, subsidies, or synthetic substitutes for community.
@otrasenda_AC Yes! Like ecosystems, societies collapse when small functional groups disappear. Reintroducing communities and sacred practices (codified behaviors, embedded in cultural traditions that function as adaptive mechanism), is our way of “rewilding” social life and antifragility.
@otrasenda_AC Maybe we need a social rewilding—restoring our “wolves”: guilds, associations, communities. The nodes that keep networks complex, adaptive, and antifragile.
@otrasenda_AC What we face is a multiscale erosion. Without small communities, perturbations either shatter fragile individuals or destabilize large institutions.
