The Global Biotech Potato Partnership working to introduce disease resistant potatoes in farmer and consumer preferred varieties across the Global South.
Dr @CanisiusKana, @aatfafrica Executive Director, talking about communities' interaction with science and new scientific innovations:
Misinformation often thrives in the absence of credible voices that communities recognize and trust. We need to conduct demos that show people what new scientific innovations are about. People need to touch the science in the language they understand.
Ethiopia has approved the commercial release of TELA GM maize, modified for pest resistance and drought tolerance, marking the countryβs first transition toward a genetically engineered food crop for direct consumption.

Excellent results, finally after centuries - a sustainable solution to the most economic important potato disease globally. Congratulations to @RwandaAgriBoard@Cipotato@aatfafrica@CipotatoRW
RAB, development partners, and farmers who attended the event praised the varieties for their high yields and strong resistance to late blight disease, which has previously had a severe impact on potato production.
Harvesting activity of improved potato varieties (Victoria and Ndamira) to assess their resistance to late blight disease took place in @MusanzeDistrict, following similar exercises recently conducted in @Nyamagabe, Rwerere (@BureraDistrict), and Tamira (@RubavuDistrict ).
π Why do bioscience innovations stall in Kenya?
ISAAA AfriCenter is inviting you to share your insights through a short, anonymous survey that will help shape the Kenya Bio-entrepreneurship Module (KBEM) β an open, evidence-based resource designed to strengthen research-to-market translation across Kenyaβs bioscience ecosystem.
𧬠Researchers | Startups | TTOs | Innovators | Ecosystem partners β your perspective matters.

Besides the CFT & NPT, Seed bulking of biotech potato varieties has kicked off! Performance is outstanding, and progress is on track for timely delivery. Kudos to the dedicated @RwandaAgriBoard, @CipotatoRW technical teams for this promising achievement.
In 2026, join @FAO in marking #YearOfTheWomanFarmer, honouring the women who grow our foods, support our families & sustain our communities. We must close gender gaps in land, pay & opportunity so every woman farmer can thrive and help transform our agrifood systems. #IYWF2026
The safety of the people is at the top of the priorities/agenda for researchers every time they step inside that lab, as agricultural biotechnology continues to create a pathway towards a food secure Africa, says Dr @ericmagembe of the @Cipotato.
Concerned about soil health with GM crops? π±
Fact: GM crops like Bt maize/cotton actually help farmers REDUCE the need for harsh chemical sprays.
This is because the Bt protein breaks down naturally, leaving our soil to thrive.

One of our scientists' sworn duties, and which they never abandon come what may, is ensuring safety of new scientific innovations.
In agricultural biotechnology especially, our forte, scientists work hard so that future generations have access to plenty of safe, nutritious food.
Potato farmers know the heartbreak π
You walk into your shamba & find late-blight disease has wiped out up to 80% of your potato crops
Thankfully, our advanced transgenic Shangi potato offers KSh 21.2BILLION in benefits to farmers!

KSh 20.4 BILLION lost in just 5 years.
That's the cost of delay from holding back the approval of advanced crop varieties in Kenya. Our recent media roundtable broke down how this impacts our food, farmers, and the economy.

Dr @MargaretKarembu during OFAB Africa Media Awards in Nairobi, Kenya: Africa stands at a defining moment. Our population is growing, our climate is changing, and
our food systems are under pressure. Yet, we are not without solutions.
