In November 2023 the whole country watched forty one men walk out of a collapsed tunnel in Uttarkashi.

The machines had failed. The last twelve metres were dug by hand, by twelve men brought in from Delhi.

Three months later one of them was sleeping on a footpath outside the rubble of his own house.

His name is Wakeel Hasan.

He is a rat hole miner, one of the small group flown to Silkyara after the auger machine broke inside the mountain and the rescue stalled. They crawled into the pipe and dug the remaining debris out by hand so a steel passage could be pushed through. The forty one trapped workers came out on the twenty eighth of November, after seventeen days.

For a few weeks the country could not praise them enough. The Uttarakhand government handed each of them a cheque for fifty thousand rupees.

Hasan asked for a house.

On the twenty eighth of February 2024, the Delhi Development Authority demolished the house he already had, in Shri Ram Colony in Khajuri Khas, as part of a drive against unauthorised construction. His family said no notice came.

He sat outside the rubble. His family were photographed eating dinner in it.

He spent two nights on the footpath in front of what had been his home. The authority then offered him a guest house in Vasant Kunj and said a flat would follow. He refused, because the assurance was only spoken. Nothing was on paper.

A local member of parliament said the house had legal issues and promised him a government housing scheme flat soon.

Ten central trade unions issued a statement calling it a targeted and vindictive uprooting. The authority said it was a routine encroachment drive and that no individual had been singled out.

What Hasan himself said was shorter.

We rescued forty one people from the Silkyara tunnel, and we got this in return.

And this. There were tears of joy when I came home after the tunnel rescue. Now I sit here homeless, with tears of sorrow.

Being a Muslim isn't easy in India.

A Chandigarh court on Monday denied bail to Hassan Siddiqui, a Hyderabad resident arrested for posting a video allegedly showing PM Narendra Modi.

The judge calls the allegations serious and claims that his release could lead to a disturbance of public order.

Siddiqui was booked for sharing and commenting on the clip, which he claimed depicted the PM.

Meanwhile, the woman (Madhu Kishwar) who originally posted the exact same video walks free, and the thousands who amplified it sleep peacefully at home.

Alhamdulillah, Junaid's family has been released. But their release isn't something we should be celebrating. The real question is why they were arrested in the first place. Was Abhijeet's family arrested? Were any other families treated the same way? Were their homes raided and their relatives subjected to harassment by the authorities?

If this treatment was unjustified, then their release merely ends an injustice that should never have occurred. It doesn't resolve the deeper problem. Unless the underlying pattern changes, what exactly are we celebrating? What guarantees that Junaid or his family won't be subjected to the same harassment again? These are the questions that deserve public attention and protest, not quiet relief that an injustice has temporarily come to an end.
