@N8Swick Head color on Scaup and bill length on Dowitcher have gotta be up there. Primary projection on empids is impt but folks get all kinds of confused about how to use it, you'll see a bird called short-winged & long-winged in back to back comments.

It was a Double-crested Cormorant.
