@AlexDemSoc_161@hardinpol I mean who else would run against him and win? Even if streeting went against him Burnham would crush him amongst the members. This seems to be a fait accompli rather than a coronation. Kamala was coronated in the US. Burnham’s popular support is so large he is inevitable
@CarlosSarPrada@AlexDemSoc_161 NATO will still make decisions with or without Spanish participation. But Spain can influence those decisions and play a role in the more dovish wing of the alliance if it chooses to
@mateospqr@AlexDemSoc_161@yslenjoyer Not necessarily, Congress has mandated that any president abide by article 5, even if the president wishes otherwise he would be forced to
@AlexDemSoc_161@yslenjoyer It’s being proven that nato is needed to defend Europe, and despite what Trump says, he is unable to leave nato, or not defend Spain should it invoke article 5. There is a better chance of the US leaving nato than there is of the US not defending Spain in a war with Russia
@SeanTrende@janecoaston@geoffreyvs I think likely that democrats and republicans confirmed the demographic shifts that weren’t entirely set until 2018 or even 2020, namely educated suburban white woman trend towards democrats and working class Hispanics and whites trending towards the GOP
@AlexDemSoc_161@amorgosoid Are you then going to argue that the US funds Europe’s defense too because Spain is way outspent? It’s about percent of gdp, not numbers when you compare members of the alliance’s willingness, whereas actual defense capabilities are numeric
@AlexDemSoc_161 Spain leaving nato is about as useful for defense as the UK leaving the EU was for dealing with Europe writ large. No voice in the room where decisions are made, yet still bound by those decisions. It’s not perfect, but it’s what we have
@AlexDemSoc_161 Surely as the weakest of the 3, the EU would do better to side with the US. Don’t give the far right license to work with Russia, which is exactly what this would do. Has the US had some horrendous decisions (ie Franco)? Absolutely. But Russia is actively invading Europe. (2/3)
Farage does this to escape an inquiry into a 5 million pound gift for winning the Brexit referendum which he failed to report to the proper authorities. Farage will almost certainly win this election, as it is in Reform UK’s strongest seat in the country
