🗣️"I wouldn't let past races define your whole running career. They can indicate something about your next race, but you don't want to rely on that too much. There are many people here in Japan who have done very similar things or even more. The guy who beat me in Osaka by two seconds (Taisei Kato) — his marathon debut was a 2:13, and he just ran a 2:07. I don't think there has to be some defined pathway of: run this 10K, run this half marathon, run this marathon time."
My latest guest on The CITIUS MAG Podcast is Ethan Shuley and if you didn’t know his name as of a few weeks ago, you weren’t alone. But now, more people are paying attention since Shuley just ran 2:07:14 at the Osaka Marathon, becoming the 7th-fastest American ever on a record-eligible course.

I had a chance to speak to @Biya_simba35 today about his @WMMajors debut at the #TCSNYCMarathon on Sunday. He is the fastest American in the field with a 2:06:53 PB.
Lost in the avalanche of results from this weekend was that @Biya_simba35 set a new @usatf record for 10-K on the road in Tokyo on Saturday night: 27:32. The old record was 27:48 by Mark Nenow from 40 years ago in 1985!
✍🏻 Biya Simbassa, 2024’s fastest American marathoner, has signed a new contract with Asics.
At last December’s Valencia Marathon, he ran a three-minute personal best of 2:05:53 to become the fourth-fastest American marathoner in history.
He’s slated to race at the upcoming NYC Half on March 16th. He boasts a half marathon personal best of 1:00:37 from the 2023 Valencia Half Marathon.
In case you missed it, he was a guest on The CITIUS MAG Podcast in December and took us through his breakthrough year: https://t.co/Lan7mgPJog
“It’s a process. I don’t want to jump the process.”
Get the full story behind Biya Simbassa’s 2:06:53 run in Valencia (No. 4 all-time in U.S. history), his decision to work with coach Ian Carter and how this shifts his perspective on the marathon.

For those who abide by the "nothing new on race day" rule, Biya Simbassa put less than two miles on the shoes he wore at the Valencia Marathon before racing in them – and they were a half size bigger than his regular running shoes.

How Biya Simbassa Ran 2:06:53 At The Valencia Marathon To Become The Fourth-Fastest American Man In History 🇺🇸
Biya Simbassa (@Biya_simba35) was hoping to run the Chicago Marathon but his 2:10 personal best and 11th place finish at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials didn't get him a spot in the elite field.
So he asked his agent @hawisports to see if he could get into the Valencia Marathon.
Elite coordinator @marcroigtio got back and said Valencia's last pace group for the elite men would be targeting 2:06:30.
Simbassa shifted some of his training to try his best to get close to that.
New podcast interview unpacking his race + how it all came together ⤵️

Did not expect to wake up to an American running a 2:06:53 marathon this morning. That's the magic of Valencia.
Biya Simbassa becomes just the fourth American under 2:07, joining Khalid Khannouchi (2:05:38), Galen Rupp (2:06:07), and Ryan Hall (2:06:17).

Things we love to see from the Valencia Marathon 🇪🇸
• Edward Cheserek (@KINGCHEZZ) goes 2:05:24 (12th place) to lower his personal best from 2:11:07 from last year’s New York City Marathon. Quite the range to go along with his 3:49.44 mile personal best and 59:11 half marathon personal best.
• With a 2:06:53 for 17th place, Abbabiya Simbassa (@biya_simba35) moves to No. 4 on the all-time U.S. men’s marathoning list and clocks the fastest performance by an American of 2024. Only Khalid Khannouchi (2:05:38), Galen Rupp (2:06:07) and Ryan Hall (2:06:17) are ahead of him now in American history.
Earlier this year, Simbassa was 11th at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. His marathon personal best coming into the day was 2:10:34 from his debut at the 2023 Prague Marathon.

Congrats @Biya_simba35! Here we are back when he was a middle distance runner, clocking a 13:29 5k to top the https://t.co/1PNhsIrltx 5k list. Happy for his continued success!
