At least five of the actors who portrayed the ‘Marlboro Man’ for the tobacco company, Marlboro, Western themed ad campaign later passed away of lung cancer...

The “Marlboro Man” was one of the most memorable and successful advertising campaigns of the 20th Century. This is an iconic figure used in tobacco advertising campaigns from 1954 to 1999. The campaign was conceived by Leo Burnett in 1954 to market filtered cigarettes to men. The figure, typically a rugged cowboy, conveyed an image of freedom, attitude, charm, and masculinity. 

Several men portrayed the character, including real-life rancher Robert Norris, who appeared in the ads for 12 years and reportedly never smoked. The advertisements were highly successful, helping make Marlboro one of the most famous tobacco brands in history. The ad includes a Surgeon General's warning, which appeared on cigarette packs as awareness of health hazards evolved. 

The campaign was first introduced in 1950s, he embodied rugged independence and frontier masculinity, turning Marlboro into the world’s best-selling cigarette brand. But behind the cowboy image was a tragic irony: several of the men who portrayed him later died from smoking-related illnesses.

Wayne McLaren, a rodeo rider featured in ads, passed away from lung cancer in 1992 and spent his final years campaigning against smoking. David McLean, who appeared in TV and print campaigns, died in 1995 of the same disease. Dick Hammer, an athlete and firefighter turned model, died of lung cancer in 1999. Eric Lawson, who played the Marlboro Man from 1978 to 1981, died in 2014 from complications of COPD. Jerome Edward “Tobin” Jackson, another face of the brand, also lost his life to lung cancer in 2008.
