For me, this is why I will always strive, hard as it is, to never solicit funds from the public, no matter the situation.

Humans are an interesting bunch; the moment they give you their money, they believe they own you; your reactions, your speech, the very way you are allowed to exist. You are expected to live on their terms, and the moment you don’t, they remind you.

They remind you how they gave you money when you needed it, how they picked you up from the sewers you were languishing in, how you should, in some way, remain indebted, not just in gratitude, but in blind obedience.

We saw it with Mummy Zee, how quickly people tried to silence her the moment she spoke on issues, how readily they reduced her to a poor housewife who couldn’t afford basic household items.

We are seeing it again with Obadiah, how the expectation now is complete exposure, that he must lay himself bare, detailing every financial transaction he has engaged in simply because people are contributing to his surgery.

Now allow me pause here: it is important for anyone who is to be operated upon to be honest and accountable to the very people who made such a surgery possible. But there is a thin line between accountability and ownership.

Posting one’s account statement, especially when the purpose of the crowdfunding has already been achieved, does not in any way prove accountability. It is, in many ways, an invitation to pry into that person’s life, and the moment something does not align with expectation, the outcry goes, “Ah, so you even bought a shirt with our money?”

It is humiliation, dressed up as concern for accountability.

And humiliation, as it turns out, is a tool the average human wields; an effective way to bend beneficiaries to their will. It is a shame how easily, how eagerly, we resort to it.
