After over 40 years of committed service to our community, including the last 10 as Fire Chief, South Metro Fire Rescue Fire Chief Bob Baker is retiring in May of 2025.

Under Chief Baker's leadership, South Metro has become recognized worldwide for its outstanding service to the community.  Only 13 fire departments in the U.S. and Canada are both accredited and rated Class 1 (the highest possible) for insurance purposes while serving a population of over 500,000 people - South Metro is one of those.  South Metro’s wellness programs promoting physical and mental well-being of first responders have become known globally as the best such programs anywhere in the world. 

The SMFR Board of Directors is committed to finding a Fire Chief equally dedicated to service and the safety of first responders and has begun the search for Chief Baker's successor, with the goal of having the new Fire Chief in place sometime early in 2025.

Community members wishing to provide input to the Board are invited to do so at the next board meeting to be held Monday, October 21st at 6:00pm at 9195 E Mineral Ave, Centennial, CO.  Community members may also contact our Board Chair, Jim Albee, at [email protected] or 303-886-0667, or any other board member.  A listing of board members can be found here.

HB24-106 passed unanimously this morning reclassifying emergency dispatchers as first responders. SMFR personnel proudly contributed testimony in support of this historic vote. Colorado is now the 20th State to recognize emergency dispatchers for the work they do and the service they provide their communities.
