Rep. Ro Khanna was blocked on a road near Khirbet Zanuta on Wednesday. That happened, a NYT photographer saw it, and if the armed men who did it broke the law, prosecute them. Now the rest of the story.

The IDF says its troops and police dispersed the civilians and let his vehicles drive on. His own aide says the group was released when officers arrived. Yet the tweet claims the IDF "sided with the settlers and continued our detention." Both cannot be true.

The "M4 machine guns": the M4 is a carbine, and it is precisely the rifle the IDF issues to civilian rapid-response squads in the area. Nobody, including Khanna, has established whether these were "hoodlums" or local security members reacting to an unidentified convoy that no one knew was coming.

Because no one did know. Israeli security officials confirm the congressman never coordinated the visit, which is why he had no protection. He toured Area C with programming run exclusively by Palestinian hosts, by his own description, to get an "unfiltered" view. Unfiltered also means unverified.

And the timing tells its own story. Incident Wednesday. Tweet Saturday, minutes behind a New York Times article, from a politician who told Reuters this trip made him "more resolved" to run for president in 2028, and who declared anyone unwilling to use the words genocide and apartheid "morally compromised" before he ever got in the van.

An hour on a blocked road is not Israel's finest moment, and settler violence, including Saturday's attack on a CNN crew near Sinjil where four suspects were arrested, deserves condemnation and prosecution. But a presidential launch video dressed up as a human rights report deserves scrutiny too.

The pager operation against Hezbollah was a masterpiece of modern warfare. Israel also executed a brilliant 12-day operation against Iran that left the regime in shock, its top generals assassinated, and the Ayatollahs held by the throat.

Yet every time Israel had momentum, whether in Gaza, Lebanon, or against Iran, you personally intervened and stopped them at the worst possible moment.

you were personally briefed by Mossad that defeating Iran would take at least a year of consistent pressure. Yet you pushed for quick results, changed the original plan, and turned what could have been a strategic victory into a strategic defeat.

Now, after signing a humiliating deal that buried the Iranian nuclear threat instead of eliminating it, you come out blaming Israel for taking too long and for how it fights.

The question of civilian casualties should be addressed to Hezbollah, not Israel. Hezbollah deliberately operates from within populated civilian areas, using civilians as human shields and endangering their own people.

This strategic failure is not due to Israeli incompetence. The main problem has been your repeated intervention and bad timing.

You don’t get to sabotage the campaign and then blame Israel for the results.

In a period of two-months, Israel has gone from a great ally and partner in war, fighting by our side against a horrible enemy that has killed thousands of our people, killed tens of thousands of their own people, and was a dire nuclear threat intent on attacking us, to Israeli PM Netanyahu being a difficult person who should be thanking us for saving his country from Iran and should get our permission if he wants to defend his people from Hezbollah and Iran, and stand down when his country is attacked.  

And just yesterday, Israel's PM avenged the execution of 5 American soldiers by taking out a Hezbollah commander/terrorist.  And only Israel has been killing Hezbollah leaders who murdered our Marines, soldiers, embassy staff, and more.  It seems to me a kind word is in order.  How does this make any sense?

No. The story was not overlooked or buried.

Israel immediately informed us the attack happened. There were numerous investigations. The Captain of the USS Liberty was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Israel apologized and paid reparations.

The truth is, it's just not a big story. It's a tragic story, and no doubt. But it isn't a big story.

34 Americans died on the USS Liberty in 1967.

11,363 Americans died in the jungles of Vietnam in 1967.

Friendly Fire is horrific, but not uncommon. There is very little reason for a sixty-year old friendly fire incident to be widely known about, much less widely discussed.

For example, that same year, 1967, a US Marine Corp jet attacked a US Army position on Hill 875 in Vietnam, killing 42 American soldiers.

59 years later, not many remember Hill 875, not because it wasn't horrific -- it killed more Americans than the attack on the USS Liberty -- but because it isn't useful as a talking point to implicate the US/Israel relationship.

As to the second part of your question, we aren't discussing the USS Liberty today because of new information. We are discussing the USS Liberty today because of old -- even ancient -- grudges.
