Hello! I just refreshed my pinned tweets. I usually share all things Tolkien, folklore, folktale, and sometimes just RT cute arts or cats. Below are examples of the types of things I like to tweet!

This one is about Tolkien's essay on fairy stories. https://t.co/vhtbp0bNK4

On 8 March 1939, J. R. R. Tolkien delivered a lecture at the University of St. Andrews, which was published as essay "On Fairy Stories", in which he argued that fairy tales are not just for children, describing what it means to enter this realm.

Some thoughts required longer writings, so I made a Substack to share this post that had ruminated in my brain since I was sick for weeks due to the haze (with a little personal reflection on Cirebon mask dance).

What does art mean when we burn off its prophetic quality and neutralize its ability to give voices to the voiceless, leaving it a beautiful but empty shell that keeps vomiting the tired echoes of "peace" and "harmony" without mentioning "justice?"

I told my papa on his grave that we could've talked about this book for hours: a story of Iraqi sisters and their war journalist nephew, talking about generational trauma, queerness, art, post-war trauma, and who gets to tell what in history. Thank you @transitreads for the book!

This is one of my favorite stories in this Indigenous anthology. Basically a commentary on how colonial attitude creep into queer community.

I want to reach into the pages, shake Joe, and yell that "Cam" with his elk tooth necklace is bad news no matter how hot you think he is.

I've been wanting to read more books by Native American/First Nation authors. I love how contemporary the stories feel despite most of them being influenced by folkloric horror, and the focus on Indigenous survival is strong. And this cover art by Perry De La Vega is GORGEOUS.

If you've read Perfect Victims by Mohammed El-Kurd, you saw his depiction of "pity (only) for flawless victims" and how it's used to ensure silence and passivity. Noor's book rejected such concept. The fact that this was written by a queer Palestinian author spoke volumes.

Just read The Last Prophet of Palestine, an indie debut of queer Palestinian writer Noor Al-Ahmad (she's on Threads & IG as noortellstories), retelling the story of the Messiah in modern Gaza as a secret sect, with deeply flawed "apostles" and a queer Palestinian woman in Jordan.

A queer social satire featuring a tired, angry, swole Tamil rideshare driver and her problematic "ally" girlfriend? A searing jab at gig work system and how capitalism made working-class people unable to organize without getting punished? I'm in. Thank you, @transitreads!

I love that the anthology embraces the multiplicity of being queer, not just what the mainstream narrative says about what being queer should be or look like. And a little personal note by me at the end (and why you should also read queer Indigenous works). 2/2

My thoughts about "On the Brink of Belief", a multi-genre anthology by South Asian LGBTQIA+ authors (an initiative of The Queer Muslim Project). At first I thought I'd just share a single photo and post. Then I wrote longer for IG then decided to share it here. 1/2

"Just do sport and stop being political." Idk, I grew up with stories about Muhammad Ali and then (just recently) found out about Jack Johnson, and they had no other option because the world around them made their existence and basic moral principle, essentially, political.

My birthday books: an Indigenous horror anthology, an anthology by South Asian LGBTQIA+ authors, two nonfiction by Palestinian authors, social thriller by Tamil authors, and a novel by queer Iraqi-Palestinian-Lebanese author. Thank you @transitreads for the 4 books in the front!

Inspired to share recommendations on IG after getting two books by queer South Asian authors for my birthday. Love how they also bring distinctive perspectives on how they depict queerness, which I can relate (one of my birthday books is among these top three 😊) 1/3

The authors drew from their own experiences and history of their respective countries for layered queer storytelling. 3/3

These ones have intriguing premises! 2/3

Found a tiny cow in a frozen chicken cuts package (for some reasons). Anyway, her name is Dhenok and she's my bookmark now.

(Book is "Tell Me I'm Worthless" by Alison Rumfitt. You want an angry, unsettling, haunted house horror by trans author, you get this)

It's worth reading Macklemore's full letter regarding how Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium, pressured Ed Sheeran to cancel Macklemore, and how Sheeran caved to this pressure, despite 1) his decade-long friendship with Macklemore, and 2) how Sheeran had no problem eschewing "neutrality" when it came to Ukraine.

What this shows is exactly what @EliClifton and Ian Lustick write about in their new book "Israel's Lobby: America in the Grip of a Foreign Power."

It's no longer just about how Israel or pro-Israeli elements push US foreign policy in a direction that undermines US national security (such as starting a disastrous war with Iran).

It's now also about how these elements constitute a direct threat to the freedom of speech of ordinary Americans, and as a result, a threat to American democracy.
