This looks to be a new species of the beastly leiodid genus Dietta, collected in 2011 in Pichincha, Ecuador. Surprisingly the hind leg spines are in both sexes. It'd be interesting to know what they're for. But these have never been seen alive, only collected in flight traps.
Hello World!
Mason bee hatching. One of my favorite pictures. You can see the broken cocoon and the bee that has developed inside. After the shooting, it took less than half an hour until the bee was ready to fly and took off.
Another remarkable example of tool use in ants: fire ants “paving” sticky surfaces. I’ve seen signs of this behavior, but I didn’t expect it to be so robust until my friend told me about it (Wang et al., 2021 Insect Science).
@Nature released the print version of the last issue today. Our work has been selected as a cover story, and our beetle is on the cover! Entomology forever!
Cette photo n’est pas un œuf de dinosaure exhumé par des paléontologues… 🦖
Il s’agit d’une mine, avec au centre une représentation de la quantité de cuivre qui en a été extraite.

A real stunner, Tefflus carinatus violaceus from Western Tanzania also strangely called peaceful giant ground beetle. Not so sure about the peaceful part from a land snail’s perspective but this one didn’t bite. #NotaCarabus#Tanzanitebeetle#FirstRains#Panagaeini
Wasps, Hymenoptera. Incredible in shape, color, size and, above all, reproductive strategies. With around 160,000 described species, they form one of the four mega-diverse insect orders.

If you listen or watch one thing today, Sir David Attenborough’s speech to the COP26 conference has to be it. An outstandingly chilling reminder of why time is ticking. Oh, and at 95 years old, wow.
A very strange creature encountered this summer on the field. This caterpillar with hydraulic tentacles is none other than the "filament bearer" - Nematocampa resistaria. No need to go to the tropics to find extravagant creatures.

@Edel_PLopez Quite a simple setup. A white plate or sheet of paper to put the specimen on, a canon EOS 7D with a 105 mm macro lens, and a cobra flash associated with a DIY light diffuser.
