CRYPTO(.)COM TO DELIST TETHER’S USDT FOR EU CUSTOMERS BY JANUARY 31

- Crypto(.)com announced it will remove Tether’s USDT stablecoin from its platform for European users by January 31, 2025.

- This move is in response to the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulations, which enforce stricter compliance rules for stablecoins and other digital assets.

Key Details:

- Alongside USDT, Crypto(.)com will also delist Dai (DAI), Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), Pax Gold (PAXG), Pax Dollar (USDP), and three derivative tokens operated by the exchange.

- Users must convert or withdraw these assets by March 31, 2025. After this date, any remaining non-compliant tokens will be automatically converted into a MiCA-compliant stablecoin or asset of equivalent market value.

- This action is part of Crypto(.)com’s efforts to comply with MiCA, which requires stablecoin issuers to meet stricter financial and licensing requirements.

Why This Matters:

-The exchange becomes the second major platform to delist USDT in the EU. Coinbase had already removed USDT from its European platform in late 2024, citing MiCA compliance.

- MiCA regulations demand stablecoin issuers hold a portion of their reserves in cash at banks and obtain an e-money license from an EU member state.

- With two major exchanges removing USDT in Europe, liquidity and trading volumes for the stablecoin could decline within the region, potentially shifting traders to alternative stablecoins.

- Despite the challenges, Tether has expressed confidence in meeting MiCA requirements. In December 2024, the company invested in European stablecoin issuer StablR to strengthen its euro-pegged stablecoin offering.

- In the U.S., discussions around stablecoin regulations have gained momentum, with proposed laws requiring issuers to hold reserves in the U.S. Treasury bonds. If enacted, this could force Tether and other stablecoin providers to adjust their reserve strategies or exit certain markets.

- Tether remains the most widely used stablecoin, but with increasing regulatory scrutiny, its dominance may face challenges in key markets.
