Denial of the existence of gas chambers is a disgraceful assault on the memory of all those people murdered in them: mainly Jews, but also Poles, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, and all others. It is also a slap in the face to those prisoners who risked their lives to document and convey the truth about German crimes, as well as to the Survivors who still bear the trauma of their personal experiences.

Holocaust denial has nothing to do with the truth. It is a mendacious conspiracy theory. A dangerous & hideous carrier of antisemitism & hatred that hurts people. Deniers harass & insult the memory of the victims.

June 17, 1941 | Commandant Rudolf Höss selects 10 prisoners from Block 2 and condemns them to starvation death in retaliation for the escape of a Polish prisoner, Antoni Jedliński.

They are sent to the bunker of Block 11.

''Soldiers! We have forced marches to make, battles to fight, perils to face but with constancy, victory will be ours. The rights, the honour and the happiness of the nation will be reclaimed! For all Frenchmen who have a heart, the moment has come to conquer or die!"

17 June 1963 | Richard Baer, the third and last commandant of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz, died of a heart attack in pretrial detention in Frankfurt am Main.

Richard Baer was born in 1911. He became a pastry chef.

He served in the SS concentration camp system from the mid-1930s, including at Sachsenhausen, Buchenwald and Neuengamme. At Neuengamme, he took part in the murder of Soviet prisoners of war and in selections connected with the “euthanasia” programme. From November 1942 to May 1944, he served as adjutant to Oswald Pohl, head of the SS Main Economic and Administrative Office.

Baer served as commandant of Auschwitz from May 1944 until the evacuation of the camp in January 1945, during the period of the mass deportation and murder of Jews from Hungary and Jews from Litzmannstadt ghetto. Later, he became the commandant in Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp.

He was arrested in December 1960 and was to be the principal defendant in the first Frankfurt Auschwitz trial. His death meant that he was never brought to trial.
