Blessed Luis Quintas Durán was a young Spanish Catholic layman and martyr who lived a brief but devoted life of faith in the early twentieth century. Born on April 24, 1918, in Almería, Spain, he was the third son in a deeply Christian family of parents and four children. From his earliest years he absorbed an intense spirit of piety and charity toward the poor from his parents, and his own siblings regarded him as the most intelligent among them. He formed his Christian character through active membership in the Nocturnal Adoration of the Eucharist, the Congregation of the Luises, and the Conferences of Saint Vincent de Paul.

When the violent religious persecution of the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, Luis was arrested along with his older brother José and his younger brother Mario, then only fourteen. Bound and led through the streets of Almería amid insults and blows, the eighteen-year-old Luis raised his voice to encourage his grieving parents and to proclaim his faith, crying out “Viva Cristo Rey.” The three brothers were confined in the former convent of the Adoratrices, which had been turned into a prison. There Luis endured constant threats, mockery, and mistreatment with serenity and courage.

On August 4, 1936, while he was drinking water from a clay jug, a guard shot him through the neck, killing him instantly. His younger brother was forced to identify the body and help bury it; when the boy traced a cross over the grave he was beaten for the gesture. The family never denounced the killer, and years later the same man sought forgiveness from Mario.

Luis Quintas Durán was beatified on March 25, 2017, in Aguadulce near Almería, as one of a group of 115 martyrs of the diocese of Almería who died for their faith between 1936 and 1939. His feast is observed on August 4. In his short life and courageous death he stands as a witness to youthful fidelity, charity, and steadfast confession of Christ even under persecution.
