We were pleased to have been part of the research team that provided drone footage for this documentary. It is a difficult, but touching, story to watch.
We're hosting a workshop with the @GOSHCommunity to discuss open hardware & science in marine conservation policy to mitigate bycatch
Join us for Making Waves: Open Hardware as a Solution to Scaling up Bycatch Mitigation, 15:00 BST July 31st https://t.co/Y8bJdOaSHU @WILDLABSNET
Hopeful news for the Cook Inlet beluga #whales! @NOAAFisheries has published new abundance estimate and the trend may be increasing! More at https://t.co/pEQ5z0e9Yb #CIBW
This week, using specialized remote tools, our team and @MyFWC safely disentangled a dolphin calf in the Banana River that was first reported by a local eco-tour group. The gear was 7 ft long and consisted of over 20 strands of red braided fishing line, a sinker, and hook.
The entanglement caused significant wounds to the calf’s flukes, illustrating the dangers of fishing line to wildlife. In fact, entanglement in fishing gear is a leading cause of death for dolphins in the Banana River. Calves are especially at risk due to their curious nature.
We will continue to monitor the calf ("Baldwin") to be sure no gear remains. We're so thankful to our partners & members of the community who supported these efforts: Wildside Tours, Cocoa Beach Dolphin Tours, @MyFWC@NOAAFisheriesSE@SeaWorld@HarborBranch@BluWrldResearch
We enjoyed seeing everyone and sharing our knowledge! Hopefully we can find solutions to preventing entanglements from ever occurring, but until then we do the best we can to help each individual.
Head of SMRU Instrumentation - does that sound exciting ?
