If you pay attention to the run-up to the dinner, Trump went on a bit of a PR tour, specifically calling out Obama.

Which begs the question: did he goad Barry into responding like this as a pretext to pour jet fuel on him, to boost the visibility of his later campaign against Hillary? He made a ton of headlines and afforded his campaign a revenge element to the story.

And who doesn't like a little revenge being delivered cold later on? It's actually a powerful tool used in movies all the time. It puts you on the side of the protaganist.
