The claim is being overstated. The AI did not solve the Erdős unit-distance problem, nor did it independently produce a finished, peer-reviewed mathematical breakthrough. What it reportedly did was generate a counterexample to one conjectural approach or heuristic assumption associated with the problem. Human mathematicians still had to interpret, verify, formalize and contextualize the result.
This is impressive computationally, but it is not equivalent to autonomously conducting frontier mathematics in the way the headlines imply.
