But they did preside over the transition from a country built around broad middle-class prosperity to one built around ownership, leverage, and financial extraction.
And by the time younger generations realized what happened, the ladder had already been pulled up.
The generation that did the most long-term damage to the prosperity of the average American was the Baby Boomers.
Not because every Boomer failed. Not because they were uniquely evil.
Because they inherited the strongest middle class economy in human history…
overwhelmingly Boomers.
They benefited massively from cheap housing, rising asset prices, strong wages, and postwar American dominance — then locked in systems that made those same things harder for the generations after them.
Younger Americans inherited:
Manufacturing was offshored. Housing became an investment vehicle instead of shelter. College became debt financed. Pensions disappeared. Wall Street overtook Main Street. Shareholder value replaced national resilience.
The people in power during those decades were
then slowly transformed it into an asset-and-debt economy.
In 1971, one blue collar income could often buy a house, support a family, and retire with dignity.
In 2026, many dual-income college educated couples can’t even buy a starter home.
That didn’t happen by accident.
