@emilynussbaum Adolescents have a vested interest in seeing themselves as not completely understood (developmentally appropriate) & I think DEH validates that. Not saying she doesn’t redeem herself in the end, just bummed 2 see all the parents portrayed as failing 2 clue into the kids’ sadness.

@emilynussbaum Completely agree with these points; she’s actually my fave character and as a parent I completely sympathize. But look thru the eyes of Evan (& teen viewers): tho she is helping as much as she knows how, there is much that she misses and ways in which she doesn’t understand him.

@emilynussbaum DEH’s strength lies in its amazing cast, who deliver moving, wrenching performances. My issue is with the portrayal of all the parents as universally, completely out to lunch; even when they’re trying to do right by their kids they screw them up.
