Much has been said over the last few days about the Levy case and where the blame should lie.

There are clearly serious questions for the police, CPS, courts and other agencies to answer. But at what point are politicians also going to accept some responsibility?

There is a simple reality that seems to get overlooked: maths.

You cannot continually cut budgets, underfund services and reduce capacity, while demand increases, and then be surprised when the system becomes overloaded and things start to fail.

There is a huge difference between making genuine efficiency savings and reducing the actual capacity of a service to do its job.

Efficiency should mean doing the same job better.

It should not mean expecting fewer people, with fewer resources and less capacity, to deal with an ever-increasing workload — and then blaming them when the system reaches breaking point.

Individual decisions and failures must absolutely be scrutinised and, where appropriate, accountability must follow.

But political accountability cannot simply stop at the front door of the police station, CPS office or courtroom.

If you repeatedly underfund and overload a system, you cannot then pretend to be surprised when that system starts to fail and mistakes come into play.

@storchyowl @swfc Great result but we could’ve done with the North Stand being open today as it was overcrowded in the South stand. Also there was an unknown problem at the turnstiles which resulted in a huge delay getting into the ground and so I missed the kickoff.
