Except they do not. Bro I been all over Asia… PRC, Taiwan, Japan.
Taipei is a dump, dude. Fourth tier city in China. Everybody knows.
All the ambitious young Taiwanese not working for TSMC are in Shanghai or Shenzhen.
@okwap33331@Cozy_Mod3@Bluebearmonkey@Flashman200 That was good advice.
You challenged the assertion
He presented facts, stats
You could’ve analyzed w/perspective, retort
Except you weaseled, moved goalposts, provided nonlinear addendums
You got called out, then claimed bullying
Was mano a mano, not 60 v 1
Not a good look
The only “official” data are censuses taken in 2010 and 2020.
Everything else is independent studies by academics, think tanks and ibanks.
Nobody really knows how Taiwanese wind up on the mainland. Maybe many went independently of Taiwanese companies.
Your data is suss as fuck, bro.
@Brad_Setser Japan is jess sui generis… they stagnated when no other East Asian economy did.
China is so far off from anything resembling Japan.
All East Asian economies have or have had demographic problems and financial crises.
Caixin: "China’s consumers remained reluctant to spend in the first three quarters, with household spending growing more slowly than disposable income. Per capita disposable income rose 5.3% year-on-year in nominal terms. Per capita consumer spending grew 3.6%."

@Tannhaeuse23919@xie_uh@cremieuxrecueil That’s ~20th percentile in China and ~1% in the US.
I can’t trust 99% of Americans with basic Excel work. I had an engineers only from Ivy+ rule when hiring Americans.
For mainland Chinese, they can be whatever.
Here’s what’s going on here:
Based on the most recent PISA results, there are ~525,000 advanced (level 6) 15 year old mafs students in Beijing-Shanghai-Zhejiang-Jiangsu (200m population, 30% of test takers) versus…
~32,000 in the US (1% of test takers) and ~57,500 in the EU (1.55% of test takers).
And there are 1.2 billion people in the rest of China.
Cross referencing SAT data, of those ~32,000 in the US, ~60% are Azn.
What’s going on here is wypipos dropped the ball. 😐
In 2018, BSJZ had an average mafs PISA score of 591. 16.5% of students scored a level 6, the highest level.
In 2025, BSJZ had an average mafs PISA score of 612. 30% of students scored a level 6, the highest level.
In 2018, 1.5% of US students scored a level 6… in 2025, the US got a U (unreliable)… estimated to be ~1%.
Extrapolating to the rest of China in 2018 results in 45x the number of high mafs ability students in China versus the US. The same exercise in 2025 results in 115x the number of high mafs ability student.
Of course that’s erroneous. BSJZ are the wealthiest cities/provinces in China with deep scholarly histories.
But still… 16.5% level 6 in 2018 to 30% in 2025? That’s perfectly understandable given the general surge in China’s education levels over the past 2+ decades with about twice as many 15 year olds growing up with college educated parents in 2025 vs 2018.
So… 115x the number highly proficient mafs students in China vs the US… take whatever haircut y’all’s deem reasonable… with Azns being 60% of US highly proficient mafs students.
Wypipos can’t do mafs. Not jess a little behind. We’re talking multiple standard deviations… orders of magnitude of deficiency.
Jess lookit yerselves. 🤦♂️
@teortaxesTex
Taiwan is a very strange economy. One industry which doesn’t employ many people has soaked up all the investment and generates all the growth.
The profits generated by this industry is paid out largely to overseas equity holders with some paid out to wealthy locals.
The taxes collected from this industry has been used to pay down government debt and not much else. NHI spending has just matched GDP growth despite rapid aging of the population. Education spending has far lagged GDP growth.
Lack of investment in other sectors has sent all the ambitious young people to Shanghai and Shenzhen.
This is Dutch disease except with semi-conductors. A good problem to have but… isn’t doing much for the median Taiwanese.
