Firstly, @RwandaGov did not invite reporters to “witness Mr. Rusesabagina’s impending release” & none were present at the prison. I personally told those who asked there would be no photo opportunity. @Latiff was in touch with me but did not bother to confirm this fact. /2

After Rusesabagina & those convicted with him had their sentences commutated and he was released from prison, the State Dept released a statement condemning political violence, and the US retroactively rescinded the “wrongful detention” determination. /3

This is an acknowledgement that Rusesabagina was indeed involved in a violent armed group, that Rwanda was justified in arresting him and our courts were correct in convicting him. These facts are clearly too inconvenient to fit into the @NYTimes storyline. /4
