Recently, France 🇫🇷 has faced criticism from other European 🇪🇺 states, accused of "talking a lot but doing little" for European defense.
However, the facts demonstrate the opposite:
🔹Operation Sagittarius, the evacuation of French nationals from Sudan in April 2023: the French army arrived first at Khartoum airport, evacuating 1,017 people, only 216 of whom were French. "The French did everything," headlined The Economist.
🔹Middle East: for two years, France was at the heart of missions to secure the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Lebanon through UNIFIL, and deployed a hospital ship for months to treat seriously wounded soldiers from Gaza.
🔹Support for Ukraine: While French support remains largely weak and open to criticism, France has provided a significant amount of equipment, but more importantly, it finances the Ukrainian economy and has been the main intelligence player since the United States withdrew. Three-quarters of aerial and satellite intelligence is gathered by France.
🔹Nuclear deterrence: The French President announced the expansion of France's deterrence doctrine, taking into account French interests in Europe. With this "Forward Deterrence" strategy, nuclear exercises will include European partners.
🔹Greenland: an advanced presence. Many have talked, but France has done the most: sending a frigate, conducting regular exercises, maritime surveillance, and preparing for combat in extreme cold.
🔹Protection of NATO allies: From the very beginning of the war in Ukraine, it took only a few weeks to deploy forces to Romania, which commands NATO defense in the area, while others take four years to deploy a division 600 km from their own territory. Reinforcements have been made in Estonia and Poland, and advanced air policing has been implemented.
🔹Fighting the Russian ghost fleet: France was the first European country to intercept ships of the Russian ghost fleet.
🔹An independent defense industry, selling to European allies (Greece, Croatia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, etc.) and purchasing what France does not produce (assault rifles, AWACS aircraft).
🔹The immediate and total deployment of the French military to the Middle East: 19 out of 23 large surface ships out of port, 8 frigates, an aircraft carrier, 2 helicopter carriers, a supply ship, and probably several submarines deployed in the Mediterranean Sea to defend Cyprus, in the Red Sea, and in the Arabian Sea. The aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle traveled from Malmö, Sweden, to Cyprus in 9 days at full speed.
Criticizing France for sometimes seeming arrogant, or for not doing enough, is all well and good, but in the military sphere, Europe cannot do without Paris. Rather than offering criticism (we already have enough internal criticism inside France about the government and its actions), many states and their leaders would do better to examine their own performance in this topic. It is by working together that we make faster and greater progress toward our security, not by mocking each other when we are incapable of achieving even a tenth of what others are doing.
Bravo 👏🇸🇪
