Five years ago today, a suicide bomber walked toward Abbey Gate. Thirteen American service members and nearly 170 Afghans never came home.

We know what happened at 5:36 p.m. But there is so much about what happened in the twelve days before the bomb that most people have never heard.

So today, I want to tell that story to honor those we lost. Five years later, their story still matters. And if we want accountability, we need to know exactly who plotted this attack against our own. I name them because you cannot have accountability if you don't even know who you're looking for.

This episode walks through how the plot came together, how the bomber went from a prison cell to Kandahar province, then Kabul, and ultimately through the checkpoints surrounding Abbey Gate. It follows the people who helped him along the way and asks why, five years later, those we identified have still never been held accountable.

We did this type of investigation for our brothers we lost in Benghazi, and it meant just as much to do this work for the families impacted by the attack at Abbey Gate. I hope they know how much care went into getting this story right, and most importantly, that their loved ones have not been forgotten.

I put out an audio episode this morning on @the_watch_floor telling you the story of the Abbey Gate plot, based on what we uncovered during our investigation.

And in this episode, I name people the U.S. government has never publicly told you were involved…

The son of Osama bin Laden.
The son of Jalaluddin Haqqani.
The son of Mullah Omar.
The son of Mullah Dadullah Lang.
And the son-in-law of Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri.

I shared their involvement, the government did NOT.

So if they won’t even tell you the honest truth about who was involved in that plot, why should you believe them when they say al-Qaeda’s plot against the U.S. homeland is “clickbait”—which is what the FBI Director called it? The plot literally involves these same individuals, people they clearly failed to collect on in 2021.

You can prepare for the threat, or you can trust the narrative designed to protect their funding of the enemy. Choose wisely.
